Palladium Bus stop to change its name
1 Attachment(s)
Think I have recently read that the bus stop on Union Road, known as "The Palladium" is to have its name change to "Ossy Mills" as this is a popular venue these days. The Palladium of course no longer exists, but .. when it did, what an brilliant place it must have been.
The "cinema hall" was erected around 1920, built on the site of some old delapidated cottages on Union Road, facing the Technical School. Built to accommodate 275 folk in the balcony and seating for 1000 in the main body, just think of the stories connected with this hall. Sketch of the cinema which appeared in the local papers in 1920. |
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
I remember it as the poshest of the 3 cinemas in Ossy.
I recall many visits with my mum to see Fred Astaire musicals, and in teen years to see Rock Around the Clock, and the Elvis movies It doesn't seem all that long ago that I played bingo there a couple of times. |
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
will always be the palladium to owd gits like me atarah, whatever they call it.:) did a bit of courting yon wi n ossy lass early teens.:)

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
Palladium and Empire, that,s where we did most of our courting, happy days.

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
Palladium, Empire and the Palace on Rhyddings Street, three cinemas in such small town, when I was little the films used to change 3 times a week at all three, Monday and Tuesday, then change Wednesday and Thursday, then Friday Saturday Sunday, whats more it was only about 5d (old pence) in the cheap seats. Bag of sweets from Makinsons on the way there, then a bag of chips at the chippy on the way home
|
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
wow has that pub been there as long as the Palladium then? looks to be the same one in Atarah's picture
wasnt it the Palladium that Winston Whittaker had? |

There was only ONE cinema in Hyndburn which operated on Sundays. That was the Odeon - and only one evening 'house' starting at 8pm |
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
This pigeon loft is an eyesore even for Ossy. It has no architectural or historic merit and the sooner it's pulled down, the better.

No cinema in Ossy opened sundays, is what I should have said. Ossy was more 'religous' - I recall getting disapproving looks for wearing slacks on a sunday. I once got some nasty flea bites from the Palace in Ossy. That would have been about '54. |

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
Didn't realise it originally had that huge entrance canopy originally, is that why the road is now a little wider on Union Road now it is not there then ?
As an aside ... hope I am correct about this. Noticed an insolvency notice in the Observer for Vincent Whitehead. As I understand it, he bought the Palladium and the Church Commercial. |

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
About two years ago my Dad phoned the number on the side to enquire if it was for sale. He was told that the owners had taken it off the market - then there were rumours that Ossy Mills had bought it but I don't think they had - the FOR SALE sign is still there and there's been no action in all this time.

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
We live very near to Ossy Mills.
If I told my 8 year old son to get off the bus at the Palladium he wouldn't know what I was talking about. He knows exactly what Ossy Mills is though. The Palladium is obsolete now to kids. |

The Palladium did open on Sundays, showing Pakistani movies. Coach loads from all around the East Lanc,s area every week! |
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
I remember in the very late sixties and early seventies it was still a cinema, but it only showed Asian films.
Since there were no other cinemas in Ossy by this time I felt very cheated that I wasn't able to go. The Bollywood posters made it look very exciting. |

Just a slight deviation. Does anybody still ask for the Load of Mischief stop in Clayton , when they are getting of the bus at the Hare and Hounds?

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
Was the fancy frontage, as shown in the illustration, still like that in the forties/fifties?
Architecturally it makes more sense with that facade, than it does now. It's always looked unbalanced to me. |

I only remember it from seeing it on the front of the old Accy buses. I also remember the conductors shouting that out as a destination whilst they were at the terminal. To me it sounded like they were shouting Lord of Mischief. Which I always felt would be a good job to have. Sadly I never even made it to Master of Mischief. :D |

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
Remember it being demolished due to the M65, but can't be sure what year ... when did they start building the motorway ? ...:D
All references seem to confirm this, including Wikipedia : Clayton-le-Moors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ah-ha, just found another link in Wikipedia ... Junction 6-7 was opened in 1984 !! Gosh, how time flies.. M65 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
In other words ... Junction 7 is the Dunkenhalgh area .. so the Load of Mischief will have been demolished early 80's ... your memory of it not being there is intact then ... :D

I used to go and watch all the Scary Movies at the Palladium, remember when I was under age to go see the A rated movies. Used to slap the make on real thick.
I don't remember the Palace? I only knew it as the Shopfitters because half of all the students at Rhyddings ended up there, (except me) Where was the Empire? |

That,s where it was cash and what a great place to go in the 60s, every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. I think it was the Stag pub at the corner and a bank on the other corner.

Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
The Accrington Corporation Steam Tramways Company was a joint venture between the Corporation and a private concern, under the Accrington Corporation Tramways Act of 1882.
Construction began in 1884 with three routes radiating from the Market Place. The first ran to the Commercial Hotel in Church, via Blackburn Road, travelling past the Town Hall and the tram depot in Ellison Street. The second route terminated at the 'Load of Mischief' in Clayton-le-Moors and ran via Whalley Road. The third route ran to Baxenden Station on the boundary with Haslingden, along Abbey Street and Manchester Road. The infrastructure and depot were owned by the Corporation and leased to the company for a period of 21 years Thanks to Accrington Corporation Steam Tramways Co. Ltd. 1886-1907 |
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
Sad to see the Palladium looking derelict. As an exile of 47 years my image of Oswaldtwistle/Accrington is in a time-warp and I see the Palladium, in my mind's eye, as a cinema that's beginning to lose out to television but still attracts an audience and still looks quite smart. :)
I saw "Rock Around the Clock" there (nobody ripped up any seats) and wept my way through "Carousel" (oh....when Gordon McRae died and they sang "You'll Never Walk Alone" to his widow. Eat your heart out Gerry Marsden). I watched Errol Flynn fight the Sheriff of Nottingham and rode the range with Roy Rodgers. I also got off the 267 Ribble bus there from 1948 to 1959, going to St Mary's and then Paddock House. I see Union Rd as full of thriving shops, Church train station looking just as it had when my mother lived there, the Urban District Council offices at Church Commercial, all soot-blackened and busy, with that fascinating curved wall. I sometimes went to the Palace where the manager used to creep around the auditorium looking for courting couples "up to no good". If he found one doing something he disapproved of (God alone knows what) he would grab the male by the collar and forcibly eject him on to the pavement outside; such a guardian of public morality. :D |
Re: Palladium Bus stop to change its name
No body ripped up sets when you saw Rock round The Clock, West Ender, I must have gone on another night then:D:D
