Sam was the landlord for years in the Nags. We use to have meetings in the Nags in the 1980's, I'm sure Sam was there then

Think your right Bernard, not sure but I think Sam died whilst still in the Nags, know his wife lived in George Street in Ossy when she left the pub

Re: nags head. accrington. history..

Without being able to do any research in directories to give me information on when it was built, I suspect that it was purpose-built as a pub for Thwaites', who tried to get a monopoloy in the town centre. Withjin yards theu owned the raailway Hotel and, at the other end of their own block, the Thwaites Arms, which was knocked down c 1937 to make way for Broadway. Breweries had considerable pull with councils - hence Dutton Street and Thwaites Rd. I think Holme St is connected to Dutt6ons, but cannot remember why.

At the back of the 1909 Old Ordnance Survey Maps under beer houses is listed “Nags Head. Richard Maylor, 78 Blackburn Road. “

Lol! Wherever he laid his glass...that was Home!!!:D As well as Drinking in numerous hostelries he did also put a shift in BEHIND the bar now and then, Nags Head, St John's Tavern, Gt Eastern and Peel Park being amongst them Jaysay! I think he picked up more in "Free" drinks than he did in wages though! I once recall him being "rather merry" behind the Bar at the Peel Park, they had just taken delivery of a new ice machine, which was a bit of a novelty then, Johnny tried to operate it but all the ice spilt onto the floor, he trod on some, went flying and damn near knocked himself out!!....It was no easy task trying to get him vertical again!!:D Happy Days!!

Best Regards - Taggy

We named the hill on the railway side on Accrington cricket club after Mr Walker. It's been known as the Johnny Walker hill ever since then.

I believe that was because of the infamous "Walker stopped play" incident Bernard, where Johnny had a little stumble!!;)

That's the one. Walker had a few little stumbles in trying to get to the top of that hill. I take it you know the reason why he kept stumbling.

Well i wasnt there Bernard, but i'm obviously assuming liquid refreshment played a large part of it. He very rarely put his glass down so i'm guessing he would have had a pint in one hand, and there's something scratching away in my Brain thinking he was hold of a trophy too....dont know if thats my memory playing tricks or not though!

Johnny that day had been watching Church, I think playing Haslingden. It was early on in the season, and the Church professional that season was an Australian fast bowler. I cant remember he's name, but he bowled Haslingden out that day for 24.

The game at Haslingden was over early, so Walker and few Church fans came up too our game.

The story goes, and allegedly Walker had a pint for every run that Haslingden scored. And he would insist on on trying to walk around the ground. And he was doing alright until he came to that hill.

When they talk about Accrington characters Johnny Walker, was up there amongst the best of them.

He was almost as well known in Mallorca Bernard....as i know to my cost, i went there with him twice!!! They used to call him Mr Whisky there, because of his name!! One occasion, he had been drinking all day, we met him early evening in a local Bar at the Top of the hill in Magaluf, we had several drinks there and Johnny fell asleep on the terrace outside, we decided against waking him up, because he would never have agreed to go back to the hotel, and in his state we didnt fancy man-handling him down and back up the hill again. So we left him there snoozing away, on our way back several hours later he was still there asleep, so we then woke him up and took him back to the hotel, luckily he was well known to the Spanish Bar Owner....who i believe still remembers him well, and theres still a photo of him on the wall there!!

Think he had a bit of a balance problem Bernard, in as much he couldn't look where he was putting his feet in case he spilt some amber nectar:D
