Oct Quiz 1
Wonder if you are aware we have just two Georgian bays here in Accrington.
Anyone like to guess, then I will post photos? |
Re: Oct Quiz 1
Warner St?
|
Re: Oct Quiz 1
Mmmmm good guess, like to be a bit more specific?
|
Re: Oct Quiz 1
Oak Hill house was built in a Georgian style .. is there one left there I wonder?
|
Re: Oct Quiz 1
To be honest, not much idea really. I was in a meeting the other day and we were talking about the town's Victorian heritage and someone said that part of Warner St was Georgian. I may have got that completely wrong :D

Re: Oct Quiz 1
Must admit not too sure what you mean by Georgian Bay Atarah ? Do you mean a Georgian style 'bay' window rather than the flat ones.
Isn't there one something like this on Abbey Street .. oh hek, would have to go and look. |

Hang on ... not Marsden's Leather shop is it ? They have bowed windows ? When you say 2 ... is there another location then ? |
Re: Oct Quiz 1
Sorry if not explained correctly, I mean a rounded "bay" - rounded stonework if you will, certainly the ones I am after have windows in - and we have two, in different locations, and yet, they are not that far apart. One you could even class as "a double in the one location" I suppose.

Is the double not Marsdens though ? Wadey has one in the gallery .. but doesn't look like stonework around it. Hope ya' don't mind Wadey. [ATTACH]14737[/ATTAC They have gotta all be in that area as possibly built before 1830... Oak Street, Warner, etc. 'cept for a few mansions, like Sparth House in Clayton. |

Here is a view of the Warners Arms with Georgian bays, in all their glory.

Re: Oct Quiz 1
There is a building at the top of Black Abbey Street where a rounded bit is facing onto Black Abbey, although the building I suppose is Abbey Street. Was/is a public house .. can picture it ... but can't remember the name of the pub ?
Was it the place where the IT place used to be .. run by Brian Cucknell ? |

There were also buildings round the back for stableing when it was a coaching inn. Just as a matter of interest Atarah asked me where the other Red Lion was, that was also owned by Jacob Lang. Do you know? its just a little bit before your time circa 1810. so Goggling is out. Retlaw. |
Re: Oct Quiz 1
Did take around that area today and failed miserably ... was in car though so not so easy. Need to be on foot really.
Is there not a rounded front on a shop on Abbey Street, on the same block as Gene's dress shop ? Probably dreamt it. LOL. Re. Red Lion Retlaw .. do you mean another one in Accrington ? Loads of Red Lion's in other districts. |

The shop next door use to be a shoe shop, you went down some steps from Abbey St. Retlaw. |
Re: Oct Quiz 1
Erm ... erm . but you asked where the other Red Lion pub was ? Already established about the one on Abbey Street...
I was talking about another Georgian Bay as we don't appear to have got the correct answer yet... thought on the next block but one ... top of Oak Street turn left (North .. tee hee) ... there may be a shop there with one of these ? |
Re: Oct Quiz 1
Can we keep each thread to one question as this is getting very confusing, thank you.

Where was it that is the question Katy concentrate your mind on 1800 not 2000. These are supposed to be local history questions. Retlaw. |
