Re: Not my kitchen window!
Brave try Doug, but wrong, Bagpuss too I'm afraid.
How about a clue? The location takes its name from coppiced Willow. |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
Ok, it's on Pollard Street. But what is it.
|
Re: Not my kitchen window!
St Joseph's Belgarth Road ???
|
Re: Not my kitchen window!
No Doug, Pollarding is different to Coppicing.
Bagpuss, how do you get Belgarth road from my clue? |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
Coppice:-Trees or shrubs which are cut to ground level every few years and then regrow from the stumps into a clump of stems.
Pollard:-To cut a tree 2.5-4m above the ground to produce a close rounded head of young branches. |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
The Copes, is that any closer.
|
Re: Not my kitchen window!
Where???
(spare characters) |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
Sorry. The Copse, is that any closer.
Or how about Coppice Avenue. |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
The Old English word For Willow Is 'Withy'
A group of 'Withies' is known as a 'Grove' ,hence 'Withy Grove' Allow for corruption over time.... and you get ....'Within Grove' Any wiser? |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
St Augustine's Bolton Ave ???
Pollard St is a the bottom of Belgarth Rd so I thought it might be St Joesph's. |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
Within Grove is a small industrial area up towards Huncoat. Accrington Cemetery would fall to the south westen tip of Within Grove.
Dare I say this? Is it the Chapel of Rest. at Accrington Cemetery.... |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
I have to accord half of the coconut to Bagpuss for the answer to where the window is.
Anyone care to enlighten us about the coat of arms? _______________________ Doug: If you look At the First edition OS 1:10000 map you will see that St. Augustines hasn't been built yet but it's position is between four farms Higher Brown Birks to the south, Lower Brown Birks to the north - ish Warm Lea and Within Grove, Both slightly to the West. However the whole area was given the name, based on Within Grove Cottage when the council estate was built. |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
Correction: 'Warm Lea' should read 'Warm Leaf'. I can't type!

Bu**er, I'm going to aft to buy a map now. You have my respects bob, but please remember that I'm in Blackpool and working from an old road map and a even older defective memory. Keep them coming……… |
Re: Not my kitchen window!
Try this:
http://www.mario.lancashire.gov.uk/ It layers up to date maps with aerial photographs and old maps. It's probably the best thing to come out of the county council - EVER! I waste hours using it. |

Re: Not my kitchen window!
I only came across it by accident, myself. But isn't it typical of the way things are run around here? The things they make a b*ll*cks of are lauded to the heavens and the stuff they can do reasonably well is often ignored.

Re: Not my kitchen window!
Just tidying things up a bit.
St.Augustine's. 1909, grade II listed, In the Perpendicular style. The arms, above what is described as "mouchette tracery", I speculate, belong to Mr H.H. Bolton J.P. a major benefactor of the church. Can anyone confirm this, please? |
