Ruined

A fine neo-classical facade, defaced beyond repair. Who did it belong to and where can it be found?

That's the one I was thinking of! Near the top of Excgange Street. An old Methodist church now a snooker hall or something.

I'm full of a cold and I can't think straight tonight.

Hi AB. Was this a Gate House or an Entry Portico to an estate

Hurrah! Bagpuss got the where and Willow got the what. So it's coconuts all round chaps. Well done, I really thought my oblique photography would have you guessing for some time to come.

Yes it is Springhill Methodist Church. It was closed in the seventies(?) and a new church was built next to it on land that was once the church school. The building has since had a bit of a chequered history as an auction house, carpet warehouse, and laterly some kind of snooker leisure/snooker hall. Most of the windows have been bricked up and it looks from the outside that there may have been serious fire damage to the interior. Another sad and sorry story of neglect, wanton vandalism and unsympathetic alteration.

That brings back memories. You could see it across the valley from Church, I spent years wondering what the Greek temple was, and only found out when they started having dances at Spring Hill on Saturday nights in the early sixties. What a shame that it should have come to that.
