Does anybody know what this is and if its still there.

Re: does anybody know
Remember seeing something like that when I was a kid, think somebody said it was a ventilation shaft for a coal mine, but it was fenced of and had a cover
|
Re: does anybody know
looks more like a drainage culvert entrance
looks like a reservoir in the background no idea where and could be wrong but that's my thought on it |
Re: does anybody know
I am going for something connected with the nearby waterworks/reservoir. The brickwork around the opening would likely be done when the res. was being planned.
Location not known |
Re: does anybody know
There is a road in the background. I have seen small tunnels under roads before to let foxes, badgers etc cross under the road. This looks too far away from the road though for that.

your getting WARM but it wasn`t to let foxes etc through. the road is the key |
Re: does anybody know
Looks like it's there to stop the road from flooding.
|
Re: does anybody know
I think it's called a hole.

Re: does anybody know
To take a stream under the road? Is it the one in Huncoat between the Griffin and Hapton?
|
Re: does anybody know
Could be the collapsed roof from a coke oven or kiln? Looks very similar to the ones near blythes, but it's definitely a different road in the background.

Re: does anybody know
It used to take clay from the clay quarry at the top of burnley rd, under burnley road down to the brick works. then there was an accident involving children so they built the cable system which carried the buckets of clay over burnley road.
the reason i asked if anyone new of it is because i wanted to know if its still there. |

for Dam - how it used to be
|
Re: does anybody know
That looks more dangerous than a tunnel under the road.
|
Re: does anybody know
^^Agreed. Looks really unsafe. A good blast of wind and your car/horse is covered in clay. Any idea what the accident was? A cave-in seems unlikely beneath a major road - engineers would have been castrated.
Thanks for the pic Atarah - I've never seen that. |

Grief Mick, you got out of bed the wrong side?

Re: does anybody know
Whilst I cannot come up with the date, I do know that the fatal acident involved a Huncoat policeman's child in the tunnel, and resulted in the overhead sysrtem being initiated. There is a photo of the system in the boojk 'Hncoat Uncoated' by John Goddard, which I published.
I have just looked at the book - the photo we have been discussing is in it (p33) and tells that the system was dismantled in the 60s. |
