Never seen one of these before, has anyone else?

Probably not produced locally, more likely Staffordshire, but must have been sold around here.

Perhaps from the travelling pot/fun fairs?

They pop up on ebay all the time. They're generic, knocked out in China, same design for most towns in the UK, with the town name and usually coat of arms bunged on there.

What a shame we've posted this. We should have told Garinda that it was listed in Miller's Antiques Guide for £20,000pds in mint condition and let him bid £10,000 to get a bargain. He's daft enough to have done so.

There has long been a trade in heraldic china items. The most famous maker was Goss. There is a Goss Collectors Club, and some items bring top money. The common pieces are those bearing the namnes of seaside resorts and tourism hot-spots. Accringtonj doesn't fall into either of these categories, but there would have been people willing to buy them when they came out -though I would not have thought that was a high number in the 1940s.

^ Bob's right - looks like Goss. Similar items were made by carlton ware, shelley and arcadian factories.

They were made as souvenirs mainly for tourist towns, but also later as collectors pieces for pretty much anything with a coat of arms (towns, familes and institutions). The rarest and most expensive ones are 'matching crests', where the crest matches the object (eg - a london crest on big ben, or a blackpool crest on the blackpool tower).

I saw one of a battle ship (looked strange crafted in china) with the clayton coat of arms on ebay a few weeks back. So there may be some for the other hyndburn towns floating around too.

Them ones in Rindys post are a bit shoddy aren't they ? The colour isn't even inside the lines ! Look like tourist tat, whereas those in Pud's post, although still daft tat are at least (or look to be) better finished.
