Re: Nice bit of mock 'tudorbethan'
According to Crossley, writing in 'Accrington a Century Ago' (pages 88-89).
"The shop next to the Hargreaves' Arms and under the first house on Bank Terrace was opened as a Grocery business by John Heap. In 1847 Samuel Bury came from Crawshawbooth to take charge of his father-in-law's business and continued the business of Grocer here until 1860. In the meantime he, along with his younger brother William, entered the cotton trade and established the the firm of Bury Brothers. Mr Samuel Bury was at one time a member of the Local Board and many years later joined the Town Council..." "The old shop premises at Bank Terrace are now occupied with extensions behind Adelaide Street by Lightbowns, wholesale confectioners, the two portions being connected by a passage." |
