Photograph -Football at Peel Park
Today I took waters in the Peel Park and was shown a large photo which is going to be fixed to a wall. It was taken from Manor Street, looking across the field of play and shows the pub in the distance, with the Coppice overseeing the scene.A crowd is standing in the foreground. Two teams are battling it out. There is only one stand - to the side of the pub. One of the teams is playing in striped shirts. The caption reads that the photo was taken in 1910. It was taken by Tattersalls, who were in business from the 1870s to 1939.
Ive had a gander at Phil Whalley's book - this photo is in there on page 19 and dates it as 18th September,1920.There was a 10,000 crowd for this first match at Peel Park (In 1910 t' Stanley were playing at Moorhead ) Well worth a look. |
Re: Photograph -Football at Peel Park
Have just come back from having a coffee at The Peel Park Hotel in Accrington. I made a point of asking to see the photo you mentioned and it is indeed "grand". Excellent view of pub itself and the huge crowd watching the match. Am almost positive my ancestors would have been in that crowd as they all lived Water Street!

Re: Photograph -Football at Peel Park
I remember when I was at Peel Park Infants, the ball from training sessions would sometimes come over into our playground, followed by a large man in a red shirt and football boots.
