(S) Cryptic Clue

It isn't to be found "underneath the spreading chestnut tree", but rather Quercus Robur. What is it and where is it?

Double coconut for this one.:D

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Well considering the origins of the town name............there should be plenty about.

Keep guessing girls. Remember, the clue is in the question....

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Somewhere round the bottom end of Oak Street seems likely but I just can't visualise it there.

Acrylic-bob 30-10-2004 08:41

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

That's because it isn't. There, that is.

WillowTheWhisp 30-10-2004 08:45

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

That gets rid of that but then. Can't imagine it near Oakhill Park either so what does that leave us with?

Sorry, I'm talking to myself, just ignore me................

Right! Got it. It's at the top of Church Street/Cotton Street corner and I think it's part of Broughton Crangrove's factory/warehouse thingy building.

Acrylic-bob 30-10-2004 18:10

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Hmmm, so how does this, sort of, fit in with the, you know, clue thingy, sort of, doodah?;)

WillowTheWhisp 30-10-2004 18:47

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Well I didn't see an oak tree when I was round there. Can't I have my coconut for the what and the where?

Acrylic-bob 30-10-2004 20:08

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Since it's a double coconut quiz, I really need all of it. But being a generous sort I will allow one for "Where".

oo h come on willow put him out of his misery

WillowTheWhisp 31-10-2004 08:33

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

I'm confused. I thought the what was Broughton's and the where was top of Church Street before it wiggles round to Cotton Street.

I have no idea where the quercus wotsit comes in. I think Mez is aquainted with a tree (or was that Less?)

willow its across from barnes furniture stoe & its a plumbers merchants & i cant remember the name or the st name oo infuriating to say the least ?

Acrylic-bob 31-10-2004 10:52

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

You are both in the right area, mez is a bit off to the north though. What you are looking for is the meaning of the tree clue and why it might be relevant to the site in question.

No, ot's not accross from Barnes's. I was standing right there yesterday. The photo I took is a continuation of the same building. (note the railings)

It's just the tree clue which is puzzling me.

near junction of eagle st. & scaitcliffe st opposite to the globe centre??

WillowTheWhisp 01-11-2004 18:28

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Hang on a mo, didn't I get a cocnut for the what and where? I'm still wondering about the clue.

I did wonder if it was anything to do with Broad Oak and printing. That brings me to another point but to avoid a thread wander I'll start a new topic.

WillowTheWhisp 01-11-2004 21:23

 Which other thread?

Acrylic-bob 01-11-2004 21:55

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Sorry, you said topic not thread.

WillowTheWhisp 01-11-2004 21:59

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Oh! lol MY other topic. I thought you were giving us another clue!! I haven't posted it yet. I've been too busy thinking about oak trees.

Apart from that we've been watching the TV and being entertained by two budding novelists airing their latest offerings (my kids)

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Ok, I'll put a time limit on this one to speed things along. I will post the answer at 7pm this evening.

WillowTheWhisp 02-11-2004 07:47

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

This is a wild guess type thing.

The part of the building which you photographed was once occupied perhaps by a company/firm/industry which used the name "broad oak".

I know RGS electro-pneumatics used to be up there and also Lionel Robinsons, later the green bit was Apples MOT centre.

Acrylic-bob 02-11-2004 14:11

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

"It isn't to be found underneath the spreading chestnut tree, but rather Quercus Robur. "

Quercus Robur = the latin name for the Pedunculate or English Oak.

"...spreading chestnut tree." 'spreading' implies that the tree is broad, it's not a chestnut but an Oak, hence.....BROAD OAK.

The building in Question is thus Broad Oak Mill.

Broad Oak Mill (New Factory/Wellington Mill) SD 759 283

Probably the most impressive textile mill of accrington built 1834-37 By Hargreaves Dugdale & Co. of Broad Oak Printworks. John Rhodes was the main building contractor and the stone was brought by tramroad from Higher Antley Quarry ( adjacent to Higher Antley Hall, Bullough Park). By 1850 Hargreaves' were employing 755 people at the mill. In 1879 plant included 776 looms and 50,000 mule spindles powered by a beam engine and an 1867 Clayton and Goodfellow Horizontal Engine.

What the picture shows is the probable boiler house for the mill.

Willow gets the coconuts for 'what' and for 'where'.

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

Just to be pedantic, isn't the English oak Quercus Quercus? - and Quercus Rubra is the red oak.

I think we should be told.

WillowTheWhisp 02-11-2004 15:26

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

The quercus rubra is indeed the red oak but A-b was talking about the quercus robur which is the English oak.

That's been bugging me for days, the name Lionel Robinson, thanks for that Willow.

I am thinking it may be the bulding that used to be near the new skate park in ACCY??

WillowTheWhisp 05-11-2004 13:43

Re: (S) Cryptic Clue

No, slinky. We've already established where it is - top of Church Street.
