Resources and websites for Accrington history and genealogy
Post your links and resources here to help those researching their Accrington local history and relatives...
World War I I have just discovered the following website for World War I Campaign Medals http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ It is very popular at the moment (especially when America is awake) so try it at 9:00 am GMT. At other times it pays to be patient as it can be slow. Navigate to the advance search and submit your ancestors surname and forename. http://www.documentsonline.nationala...pe=powersearch Useful explanation about the medals from WWI here http://www.documentsonline.nationala....uk/medals.asp Further information on the regiments and battalion history can be found on the Long, Long Trail site here (try a search for Lancashire Fusiliers for example) http://www.1914-1918.net/ And of course do not forget to visit the Accrington Pals website at it's new domain http://www.pals.org.uk/ |

1901 Census
So you want to check out your 'near' relatives, or maybe want to find out who was living in your house in 1901. Then you need to shuffle over to this site. http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ The advance search features are pretty good for sorting out which John Smith might be yours. There is a charge for downloading the images. |

London Gazette
http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ Another great site to search for your rellies. Complete coverage of the London Gazette is provided for the period of the First World War. Printed volumes have been digitised from January 1914 to December 1920 (many of the military honours were awarded in the period immediately after the Armistice). Complete coverage of the London Gazette is provided for the period of the Second World War. Printed volumes have been digitised from January 1939 to December 1948 (many of the military honours were awarded in the period immediately after the end of hostilities). |
