You had a famous man hear in Accrington!!

Hi,
In 1802 a blacksmith from Accrington had an idea!!. He made his idea and his wife used it in the family home ( they had 6 kids) it became quite popular and other neighbours would cue outside to use it.
Can any body give him a name!!
And what was it!! :)

You are thinking of a mangle. There is serious doubt about him inventing it, though as he made it out of cast iron, that was an 'improvement'. It is on view in Towneley Hall, Burnley. Task was his name - Tasker St is named after him.

Hi Bob yes it was a mangle, I believe it was the rollers that were different they were made out of wood, unusual considering he was a blacksmith, also I think in America it was called a ringer.

It was called a wringer in Walsden when I used to crank the handle for mother. 1945ish.

At my grans it lived out in the shed in the backyard....and was dragged into the kitchen every Monday morning. Primed and ready for action.
At our house it lived in the kitchen....it had an enamel table top on it and it was used as a work surface.

Thats a big jump from being a blacksmith, to pattern maker then iron founder, and all the necessary tools and materials.

It may be that, being self-employed, he employed others to carry out his ideas.

As a little lad, I recall my dad telling me and my teenage aunts that wooden rollers were better than the rubber ones , made by the Pioneer factory, for squeezing tripe. On a trip to Beamish museum this year, I saw a wooden-roller mangle made by Taywil, (Taylor & Wilson of Clayton) so wood must have been used as late as the 1930s I think. I believe that the Pioneer works went into liquidation because the firm had not 'moved with the times' and gone into modern products.

You mean Tasker was his name! And when I went to Townley Hall in September, no one knew where the mangle was!
