10 Attachment(s)
While walking my dog along the canal i came across this old mill.I think its called Church Bank Mill.

HISTORY:
Church Bank Mill was built by Wm. Duckworth & Son for weaving in 1881. It closed for textile production in 1960 when Mastabar took over the site.

A weaving shed with a brick chimney built adjacent to St James’ church in 1881. It is a single storey structure constructed from stone and brick and is rendered in parts. The south part of the structure is more modern.

ENJOY :D

I think this is the mill which in 1951 was run by Barlow Bros & Greenwood, cotton weavers. Have you got access to Mike Rothwell's books on industrial heritage, Explorer?
They are on sale at meetings of the Hyndburn Local History Society in the library - see website. Next meeting 6th Feb 7.30pm

My Mum and Dad worked in this mill in the 1930s and40s. I used to go to Church Kirk School a couple of streets away, and I used to go into the mill at dinner times where my mother warmed up meals in the ovens for my brother and I.I remember putting the cotton into the shuttles and kissing the shuttle and loading them into the loom.Although I was only 10 I could stop and start the loom and keep an eye on things whilst my Mum looked after her other 6 looms, My Dad was a tackler. does anyone know what he did?

Very interesting story indeed Jim.I believe it was the tackler's (maintenance mans) job to keep the mill running at all costs. They often had a little wooden desk in a quieter part of the mill which they worked from.Tacklers were paid a little bit more than the weavers, around 35shillings per wk.
Thanks for the reply
Jason

My mum was a weaver and my dad was a tackler.
His job was to replace the large beams of thread on the looms as they became empty, and to repair mechanical faults that arose - a sort of 'fitter' specialising in weaving machinery.
