Puzzle 10

1 Attachment(s)
Since you are all having such a hard time with this round of puzzle pics I will give you an easy one to get you going again..

But beware this is not all it appears to be.

Where is it? That's the easy bit which will net you...
1000 petz money.

There is something about this feature that strikes us as slightly incongruous,(actually it is glaringly obvious). If you can tell us what it is you and your pet can rejoice with...ermmm...let's see...how about
2000 petz money!

Town Hall

"Industry and Prudence" and HBC are incongruous.

Re: Puzzle 10

Well Done Willow! 1000 Petz money has been transferred to your account.

It is indeed our lovely Town Hall.

However the incongruity will need a lot more work.

Re: Puzzle 10

Could it be the hynd chasing the lion?

That was Busman's suggestion but he's a bit tied up at the moment.

Acrylic-bob 03-12-2004 10:41

Re: Puzzle 10

Nope, as far as I can make out the Arms are heraldically accurate.

Re: Puzzle 10

PRUDGENCE..... spelling? its a 6 or G never an E

Acrylic-bob 03-12-2004 10:52

Re: Puzzle 10

Nice try Simon, but I think that is down to my naff photography rather than any mistake on the part of the stonemason.

Re: Puzzle 10

The shuttle represents cotton spinning, and the cylinders and calico the industry of printing that material. The stag is from the arms of the local family of Hargreaves, of Broad Oak, who were closely connected with calico printing. The lion is that of the ancient family De Lacy, who held Accrington by grant of Henry II.
The oak branch is trebly allusive to the name: it is bent into the shape of its initial letter; oak (Anglo-Saxon ac) expresses the first syllable; and the acorns recall the old form of the name, Akerenton.

Got to be something to do with the oak branches or where are the Acorns?

ARMS: Gules on a Fesse Argent a Shuttle fessewise proper in base two Printing Cylinders issuant therefrom a Piece of Calico (paisley pattern) also proper on a Chief per pale Or and Vert a Lion rampant Purpure and a Stag current Or.
CREST: On a Wreath of the Colours an Oak Branch bent from the sinister chevronwise sprouting and leaved proper fructed Or.

Motto 'INDUSTRY AND PRUDENCE CONQUER'.
Granted 26th August 1879.

Re: Puzzle 10

I love the language of heraldry, all those feilds and Chiefs and bends sinister etc. Thanks for that Bazf. Of course it doesn't get you any nearer, sorry!

Re: Puzzle 10

Is it anything to do with prudence? (who's she?) One could hardly describe HBC as prudent given their current level of debt.

Makes you wonder what goes on chez Willow and Busman

Lettie; listen, take notes and learn! ;) :D

Re: Puzzle 10

This is just a wild guess, but shouldn't the motto be in Latin (eg Industria et Prudence Actium)?

The Latin is probably totally out - I used a translator on the web that is pretty rudimentary!

Acrylic-bob 03-12-2004 19:53

Re: Puzzle 10

The thing about wild guess's Vorlon, is that they are usual wrong. This one does not buck that trend.

I rather think that you could all benefit by standing back a bit and taking in the larger picture, metaphorically speaking.

Re: Puzzle 10

Is it something to do with this being the side entrance and there is nothing on teh front door?

Acrylic-bob 04-12-2004 21:15

Re: Puzzle 10

Hmmm, is it?

entwisi 05-12-2004 16:15

Re: Puzzle 10

Well? am I close or does it need a bit more meat to it.

Acrylic-bob 05-12-2004 19:54

Re: Puzzle 10

Well, you are and you aren't. Sorry I can't be more help than that without giving the game away.

Bagpuss 05-12-2004 20:04

Re: Puzzle 10

It's nothing to do with what looks like two different types of stone or the fact that once again it looks like the keystone is not really a keystone, as in one of your previous threads.

WillowTheWhisp 05-12-2004 21:38

Re: Puzzle 10

Is it the fact that the inner part of the archway looks like two separate stones but is in fact all carved into the one?

Bazf 05-12-2004 22:11

Re: Puzzle 10

Not wide enough to be the main doors so may be a back enterance or the minnons enterance, trying to work it out from memory, fish market down oneside and the road down the other with the outside market behind. Got to be a rear entry. Any hope?

WillowTheWhisp 05-12-2004 22:13

Re: Puzzle 10

Or........ is it anything to do with the round lamp over the door?

Acrylic-bob 06-12-2004 06:28

Re: Puzzle 10

Remember what I said about the "bigger picture", the incongruity is more chronological.

WillowTheWhisp 06-12-2004 13:15

Re: Puzzle 10

I've just come back from standing staring at the real life version of this long enough to arouse suspicion from passers by. If you read in the papers that a couple of dodgy characters were observed casing the joint around the side of the Town Hall it was me and Busman!

I am stumped about chronology. The door below this arch opens outwards and can only be opened from the inside as the is no handle. Inside is a staircase and to the right a locked grille. Is it a fire escape? Why would you need a light above it?

Acrylic-bob 06-12-2004 14:34

Re: Puzzle 10

Deary me. Would it help if I told you that the Peel Insitute, as the Town Hall was formerly called, was first opened in 1858, (on 24th December)?

WillowTheWhisp 06-12-2004 14:43

Re: Puzzle 10

I think your avatar is putting me off.

entwisi 06-12-2004 14:45

Re: Puzzle 10

I seem to remember that the motto changed at some point. Is it that when the building was built this motto wasn't there and was added at a later point?

Acrylic-bob 06-12-2004 14:54

Re: Puzzle 10

Do you want to add a bit more meat to that, entwisi?

WillowTheWhisp 06-12-2004 14:56

Re: Puzzle 10

Accy was granted its charter in 1878 so this wouldn't have been there in 1858

Bazf 06-12-2004 15:02

Re: Puzzle 10

was first opened in 1858, (on 24th December)?

Got it, no picture of Santa!!!!!!!!!

Acrylic-bob 06-12-2004 15:11

Re: Puzzle 10

At last! That section of the building was added at a later date and was part of an intended extension to the Peel Institute. If you look around the corner you can see the ragged ends of the stone work. it was for some years covered in white faience bricks, but it seems to have been rendered recently.

I have decided that since entwisi got there first, almost, and because I seem to have a bit of brass to spare, to award both entwisi and Willow 2K each. is that fair?

Acrylic-bob 06-12-2004 15:13

Re: Puzzle 10

Or I would do if entwisi had a bank account....

WillowTheWhisp 06-12-2004 15:15

Re: Puzzle 10

Thank you very much A-b. That is very generous of you. :)

Bazf 06-12-2004 16:46

Re: Puzzle 10

OK nothing to do with Santa then!!!!!!!!! :)

Acrylic-bob 06-12-2004 17:48

Re: Puzzle 10

Sorry Bazf, it was always going to be a long shot.

WillowTheWhisp 06-12-2004 17:55

Re: Puzzle 10

You wouldn't believe this afternoon I was saying to myself things like "well it's in the extension bit round the back but I don't know what's odd about that.":s_lol:

entwisi 06-12-2004 18:22

Re: Puzzle 10

Whats this bank account thing? How do I get one?

2K would be wonderful thanks!

entwisi 06-12-2004 18:23

Re: Puzzle 10

Scrub that, now sorted.

I thought my 'money' was already in an account. Now I know better.

Acrylic-bob 06-12-2004 18:42

Re: Puzzle 10

I've just noticed that that Petz Money has changed it's name to "Ackers". That's better. I hope we can look forward to some seriously dodgy puns.
