#3 Double Pic Quiz
Here are two pictures, one on top of the other.
Identify locations of the 2 pictures. What are the areas 1,2 and 3 now? Name all the uses that 1 & 2 have been used for over the years? http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/quiz7.jpg If anyone gets them all correct on the first picture, I am throwing my rattle out of the pram. Good Luck |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
How about a couple of clues?
Their post codes might just help with locating them. http://planetsmilies.net/confused-smiley-17541.gif |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
I will expand the gaps in time but that will make picture 1 disappear.
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Suppose the theatre could be any in Morecambe, Blackpool, etc., however, as it is an Accrington theme, will guess at the old Prince's theatre ? Seem to remember trying to see around those poles in the balcony .. :D
Not a clue though re. 1,2 & 3 yet. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
has number 3 got anything to do with Stanley?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz

Are you saying the theatre is the top one or the bottom one ? |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Well done Katex - the top picture is of Morecambe Winter Gardens looking from the stage.
There are some good clues as to the location of the picture behind so I will leave it as it is for now, to give the evening crowd a chance. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
I'm guessing all three were picture houses or dance halls of Accrington??
|

One thing for sure, he has kept his rattle on this one .. LOL |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
lol I thought it couldn't be the Winter Gardens because I thought they were all in Hyndburn! :D
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Got the first one right away because I performed there 6 or7 times in one day some 40 yr's ago.
Think I was in the third one for performing once when i shouldn't have done, but thats another story. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Time to reveal a few more key features.
What are the areas 1,2 and 3 now? Name all the uses that 1 & 2 have been used for over the years? http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/ferngore2.jpg |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
I thought the area above feature 1 would have given it away but let's uncover a few more clues.
http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/ferngore3.jpg |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
I think its huncoat aint it the industrial park at the bottom of bolton avenue .... and part of it is what used to be the concrete place at the bottom on the left hand side .....
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
No.2 looks like it could be the bus depot at the bottom of Ellison Street.
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Now we are talking but not quite right. The name of one of the locations has been mentioned but oddly, not in the right place.
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz

Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
I am trying to make a thread which will work even when the answer is at the bottom so I am introducing the features a bit at a time.

Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Give you something a bit more challenging and you all hide - shame on you!
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Believe me Morecambe, they are not hiding .. probably Google Earthing ... like I have been doing ... LOL.
Thanks for these, we love 'em. It does look a little like Hyndburn Road though, particularly the ones at the top look like Asda. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Back again ... pretty sure No. 2 is the roof of the Arndale and the bit above it with the red car passing is the roundabout under the viaduct ... can see the 'flower beds' where they put special displays. ?
I await your silence, which usually means a 'No' .. :D |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Katex - If you are right, you should be able to work out what all the other bits are.
There will be another update later. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Is number three Stanley football ground?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Ok ... just re-read your original question .. :D
So area 1. will be the Vue Cinema/Bowling/McDonalds then ? Area 2. The Arndale. Still working on 3. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
3. Homebase ?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Looks like you are on the right track now but what about:-
Name all the uses that 1 & 2 have been used for over the years? I suppose there will be people around who still unsure of where this is so to keep the suspense going, here's another 1. http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/ferngore5.jpg |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
No 2 I think is the arndale roof and before that it was a car park ?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
And I think No 1 Is the site where the Cinema is now.
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Hey, we are getting there now but what was #2 before it was a car park.
A bit more is revealed. http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/ferngore6.jpg |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
No3 Aldi carpark. There was a cemetery around that area.seem to rememer they had to exume somebodies similar to how they did for the swan carpark.
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Cemetry was quite a bit further on than that mthead if my memory serves me right
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
I have a few more pictures yet so for those people who are still not sure where we are, here's one with a big chunk revealed.
What about the various uses #1 has been put to over the years? http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/ferngore7.jpg |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Of course, a major feature has been missing from this picture and had I included it, the world and his wife would have got the answer. What is the main feature missing from this picture?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Slaughter house?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Are you saying that there was a slaughter house on the site of #1?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
I think it was there
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Where's our famous viaduct then ? ... is this what you mean ?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
It could be the famous viaduct!
http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/ferngore8.jpg Ah yes, there it is. There are still unanswered questions although the experts are still trying to ID whether there was a slaughterhouse in location 2. http://www.studiosoft.co.uk/forum/ferngore9.jpg |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Based on what is there and what is missing, in what year did I take this photograph?
|
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
The slaughterhouse (abbatoir) was just going up Hyndburn Road, probably just past where the cinema complex is now Morecambe, see here:-
http://www.lancscc.gov.uk/environmen...cc/acceast.jpg Whoops sorry, doesn't seem to be able to copy/paste the zoomed in section of it (probably me) .. now you will have to do the work .. LOL. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
According to my records the slaughter house was on Hyndburn Road.
Area #2 is next to Union Street and that site has had at least 4 distinct uses since Accrington was developed in the year dot. What about Area #1 - That has had at least 4 distinct uses in tte same period, get your maps out (or your Google finger) and find out. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
Didn't realise how difficult it was to relate to then (yes, was around) and now.
Need maps on maps to sort the Georgraphy out in me head ... Funny can picture the before quite clearly, and the now, putting the two together for my pea brain is more difficult. Area 2 obviously was the sunken gardens. Area 1 .. Ambulance Drill Hall.. oh hek .. not sure.. LOL. |
Re: #3 Double Pic Quiz
It is hard to get your bearings when you are up there because the scene is constantly changing. Accrington is easy because of the railway arches but away from the centre is another story. Finding the hospital and the ESMI unit is more difficult than you would think and trying to find a particular house in the Stanley Street area is hard because all the streets look the same.
Ambulance Drill Hall was on what is the roundabout in the centre of the picture, next to the old Elite snooker hall. I hoped this thread would be over run by historians telling us all we needed to know about Accrington. I have been looking for a similar picture taken in 1986, before the Arndale was built. I missed all that through working away in the Summer of 1987. When I went, in May there were just foundations and the place was almost finished when I returned in November. When was the picture taken? |
