Can't say I've ever seen a hinge like that.

It is the underside of 'a thing-o-purpose'
I can see some wear on the protruding bits and a drainage hole.

Spot on with the thing-o-purpose, but what purpose was that. You could have called it a doofer and been just as near.

No wear on it, it was never used, and that is no drainage hole, you will get an eye opener when you find out what the hole was for.

Sorry Margaret, a gas mask would be no use to you with that thing-o-purpose.
Think more on the lines of what I know a lot about.
I've added another bit of it.

Second photograph could be an engine sump plug, I thought at first sight that it could be the base of a cartridge or shell casing with the primer removed, but then thought it was a casting.

The second photo is a casting but its not a sump plug, the hole in the middle is threaded to take the end of a 4" rod.

Never had a landmine, could do with one or two, then we could surprise some of the members on here. I bet I know who your favourite recipient would be.

The 2 raised rectangular sections on Pic 2 suggest they are for tightening the device down, but threaded for a 4" rod?
If it was 4" BSP thread i would think it was for a fire hydrant connection or similar, think you have got me on this one Retlaw - another clue perhapse - plesae, pretty please with cream and sugar

We didn't have threaded connections to fire hydrants, ours were snap in quick release.
The hole in the middle is threaded 3/16ths Whit, to take a rod 4" long.

The whole object is only 1-1/4" diam, threaded B.S.F.

I keep returning to a valve of some type, 3/16" D operating lever to move the valve head from position to position - steam valve? - perhaps to pressurise and then release the pressure to a cylinder.
Hey Retlaw, it is many moons since i had anything to do with mechamical devices, except the ones that discharged things from a rifled tube. Stumped so far on this one, but might have a better idea if i could make out all the lettering:-)

Well done walker, nice one Retlaw. Never handled one and the H B threw me a little, the & was missing. I did try and follow through what I knew of you, hence the Fire and firearm suggestions.
Thank you for keeping the few grey cells still activated.

What the ecks up with you, its nothing more than a lump of hollow cast iron the same stuff that grates in the road are made of.
Your not another of those brainwash by the media, that things of a certain shape must be horrible.
its no more deadly that a lump of stone the same size.

Can't remove something it never had, as I said its a hollow lump of cast iron, its never been more than 1/2 mile away from Bullough's since they made it in 1917.
