At Last, I'm Seeing A Couple Of Birds!
When I moved into Westwood Villas about 3 years ago one of the first things I noticed about the area was except for the local peacocks my backyard wasn't visited by any local wild birds not even the odd pigeon!
I have been trying to remedy this by putting out peanuts and fat balls all to no avail, not the slightest interest was taken. This morning though to my delight I saw not one but two delightful starlings picking away at the food I had put out. Unfortunately the peanuts and the fatty balls are still being ignored, but they were having a wonderful time going around my garden tubs and stealing my veg' seeds, Grrrr! Still at least I'm getting something maybe they will become regular visitors? http://www.countrylife.co.uk/imageBank/s/Starling2.jpg Is it just around West Accrington or is there a lack of our birds across the whole of the Accrington District. I never seem to see house sparrows anymore. Don't tell me it's bird flu' because I don't hear them sneezing either. http://www.tiptopglobe.com/skin/smile/s11082.gif Oh, how tweet! |

Once others see/hear what is going on you should get more and a good possibility that there will be other types. |

House Sparrows in Decline in Britain I think I saw a curlew last week flying over Ossie Moors, never seen one before. Was quite thrilled. Sure it was one, certainly had that long beak, and was sorta' drifting on the wind currents rather than flapping its wings. Maybe we have a bird expert on here ? |

I Was driving over to Ripon on Tuesday last week , Just got over the blubber houses , looked up , there was this massive dark brown colored bird flying around .The wing span must have been 7-8 foot with feathers for wing tips . It was BIG .

Re: At Last, I'm Seeing A Couple Of Birds!
Could well be an Andean Condor - take a look at the picture top right on Pictures
It looks quite similar. Possibly escaped from a zoo or private collection??????? |
Re: At Last, I'm Seeing A Couple Of Birds!
Thanks for that , I didn't have much chance to see it very clearly, as i was driving .

Re: At Last, I'm Seeing A Couple Of Birds!
More inclined to go along with the Buzzard, than the Andean Condor & he did say it was dark Brown (but not that big). A long shot Bonelli's Eagle (from the size point of view) normally found in Spain & Portugal, but with the climate change & all that!
still as has been mentioned it could be an exotic escapee from somewhere or other. |
Re: At Last, I'm Seeing A Couple Of Birds!
More likely a European Eagle Owl. A pair managed to breed a year or so ago up by Dunsop Bridge and prior to that there were quite a few up on MOD land in North Yorks. The colour, the wingspan and the location all seem to fit.
