Archaeological dig in Accy?
Just been told that there is a "dig" going on - opposite the Peel Park pub i.e. on the grounds of the original Accy Stanley footy club
It's folk from the Central university at Preston. Hey, this sounds like interesting stuff! Me must get up there! :) |
Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
They don't really need to dig in Accy there are plenty of relics on the surface:rolleyes::D

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! TIME TEAM ARE COMING!
Tony Robinson coming next week - they are searching to find the remains of our famous Accy stanley stands etc. TRUTHFULLY! Just been speaking to a member of the dig. The students are starting things moving then the film crew come next week. I am no.1 in the queue! |

Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
How uninteresting! - I have a photo of my 1st husband playing on the Peel Park ground, showing the stand in the background.
They don't need to dig - just ask:rolleyes: What really would interest me is a dig on the moors at 13 Stones Hill Thirteen Stones Hill (Stone Circle) | UK | The Modern Antiquarian.com ...our own little stonehenge, no less. Now that is history |

Why don't they try to find evidence of occupation of Accrington by the Monks of Kirkstall, I could show them where to look. Retlaw. |
Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
You never know, they might find a Saxon burial mound - they usually do!
|
Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
I understand the stands were removed , as was everything else there.Only thing remaining is the old changing room .

I must say I also cannot really undersand what is so good about actually finding any remains of any stands etc.
Just find it interesting to be able to see the Time Team crew in action. With thanks to Owd Bert for this photo. |

Attachment 17665 This one was in a tranquil wooded glade, and you could just imagine pixies and fairies hovering around it. Attachment 17666 Called Nine Ladies. Rumoured that they were turned into stone for taking part in the devils' ritual dance with a local fiddler. Story is that on a full moon at midnight, the fiddler plays and the Nine Ladies come to life and dance again to the Fiddler's tune... So, they are nothing special ... but only one Accrington Stanley stand. Is all very strange, but would be interesting to see what they are up to. |

I think some body's having you on, it just isn't the sort of archeology the Time Team do, they are usually after old ruins, or usually Saxon burials. Probably United Utilities laying a new main. Retlaw. |

Retlaw, have to admit, am beginning to think I have been told a load of rubbish, but, the lady i spoke to was actually on the field with a clip board. There certainly have been folk there from the Uni in Preston. This lady quite confidently said Time Team were coming next week, but .. Time Team dont seem to know owt about it. (why would the lady tell fibs?) All very odd .... watch this space

Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
A similar thing happened when I used to work for the Lancashire Countryside Service in Grane. We were contacted by a researcher for the Time Team Programme and they sent out a team from Preston to survey the site but they decided that it was not a subject for the programme.
The site in that case was Bentley House in the old grane village where the illegal whisky distilling took place in the 1860's |

Just told me Dad he is gonna have a dig around see what info he can find out :D
|
Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
My theory is that it could be working up to an April 1st prank, perhaps even instigated by the Time Team 'team'.
Fun whichever way though. Can't see any courses at Preston that specifically cover archeology .. but might be History or summat. |

Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
^^ I Agree. I can't see Time Time coming to dig such recent stuff up. Would be a bit of a waste of their time; there's lots of photographic evidence of what was there.
Plus, we do have other sites locally that would be much more worthy of exploration. Unless they know something we don't? Perhaps Peel Park was built on a neolithic burial ground? :D Lol. |

Time will tell I guess, sure Atarah will dig until she finds the truth of it all .. :D |

Its probably her standard answer to people asking her what she's doing, more than likely she's fed up with keep being asked what she's up to. So winds people up to get rid of them. She could have been working for any one, just surveying the site for rates, valutation, umpteen possibilities. Retlaw. |

If I was a member of Time Team and given the opportunity to dig around Hyndburn, I would probably choose the river Hyndburn behind the Dunkenhalgh Hotel. It's not a natural watercourse; so what is it?
Have a look at google earth to see what I mean. |

Oh but she does. She told me about the dig in the first place and I was only with her yesterday when she said "filming" has taken place this very week. OK, it may just be on behalf of the Uni in Preston, but ......
And .. if you go up and look .... 3 small sites have been "ear marked". Watch this space! |
Re: Archaeological dig in Accy?
Maybe these undergraduates need to learn 'how to dig' by practicing in places where there isn't anything valuable they might damage;)

An interesting link for those who were following this thread.
"The results will also be published in the forthcoming volume of the international journal World Archaeology which will have an archaeology of sport theme linked to the 2012 Olympics." |
