Buffering

Is there any way of stopping this annoying feature ? !!!

Trying to watch summat now on BBC I Player .. buffers all the time.

ITV catchup is worse .. goes to stills with sound carrying on.

When I have this, I close all other windows, including accyweb, seems to sort it out!

Re: Buffering

Kate, it is either your PC not fast enough or your broadband connection is too slow.

I have noticed him doing that ;)

What about setting it going once in the back ground then pressing replay - once it's buffered once it should be smoother the second time.

Yeh, son did that last time he was home, but that's a hassle to remember .. want it NOW !

Re: Buffering

"Buffering" is the act of downloading enough of the media so that you can start watching asap. It's the alternative to downloading the entire clip and starting when that's finished.

When the buffering starts, the playback plugin attempts to calculate the minimum initial download needed so that you can watch to the end without interruption (it downloads the rest during your viewing).

There are several factors that can affect this, unfortunately not all of them are "in your house" and therefore in your control. The most common cause is another download starting (or speeding up) somewhere on the network that temporarily affects your connection speed. This might be on your computer, on a computer in your house, or on a neighbour's computer. Not a lot you can do about it unless you go "hands off" on your own PC, tell the kids to stop downloading their iTunes, and go out and shoot all your neighbours. ;)

Thats down to your broadband connection which is what I said before. If you can't watch iPlayer and its down to your connection I think it is time to find a new isp.

It could also be that your isp is limiting the speed of your connection to iPlayer. Who is your isp Kate?

Isp's and the BBC have been falling out over the bandwidth that iPlayer takes up - Tiscali being one of the biggest moaners.

Re: Buffering

Am with Tiscali actually, but I don't think it will make much difference changing my ISP .. no guarantee it will be any better ... not like you can try it first.

All points above have been very helpful as I did not understand the playback thingy at all. After speaking to my bros., at length about this, who tried desperately to explain to a pea brain like me re the technology of all this, I think the best thing is to try them when the net may be a little quieter or get back to video recordings. Will just have to wait until the technology has improved on this infancy facility.

Not necessarily. You snipped out my qualifying statement, but Ive put it back above.

If you have multiple PCs in the house, any one of them might cause a problem by gobbling up the bandwidth. Oddly enough, it seems to be in our house that starting an upload has a more detrimental effect on downloads than sharing the total download capacity. Debbie and I can watch iPlayer simultaneously, but if she's uploading photos to the lab, iPlayer on my machine becomes quite choppy.

That is because I did not agree with it. If someone else starts a download as you explained it and it prevents you downloading a 500k (or the new 800k) stream then your isp is naff.

Then your router could be naff. Try looking into how you can setup QOS in your router.

I am guessing you are using ADSL. When you max out you upload it can have an effect on your download speeds. If you are FTPing your photos try a client that lets you limit your upload speed. That might help with your download issue.
