The Legend of Leigh Bowery

Anyone watch this documentary the other night?
Had never heard of him before, the eighties not being my era. Got to admit he was a total one off, weird and fascinating, amusing and shocking, all rolled into one

At times he was like a walking piece of art or sculpture. Though odd bits were not to my taste, I must admit.

Surprised to look back and see how many people he influenced.

He certainly was a 'one off'.

I saw quite a bit of him, as very often we'd be in the same London clubs, and he was certainly colouful, though not in the same league as myself, when I was at my wackiest, wearing pork chops in my hair, dresses made from vintage fifties curtains with breasts and phallus attached etc.:D

I once saw him give an 'art performance' at the Fridge in Brixton. I won't go into too much detail, but it involved an enema and some stirrups. Let's just say the audience nearest the stage would struggle getting a cab home, and would have a huge dry cleaning bill.

How we laughed...from the safety of the balcony.:D

When was the programme on? I think I saw a Southbank Show about him, but would be interested in seeing another documentary about him.

Think it was Friday, BBC 4 :)

I saw Matt Lucas playing Leigh in Boy George's musical Taboo.

I think George himself played his old mucker in it in N.Y., though it bombed over there.

It was on B.B.C. 4, and isn't on the B.B.C. iPlayer, but is bound to be repeated, so I'll keep an eye out for it.:)

Missed the first 5 minutes, so would want to see it again from the start myself.

Strange how I'd never heard of him before, yet his name was brought up on Style Trial last night as an influence on the eighties, so got another glimpse. :)
