The Kings Speech

Went to see this tonight at the cinema. What a wonderfully uplifting film, with a performance from Colin Firth to take the breath away.

Watch it if you get the chance, and you will see the following actual war broadcast from King George VI in a completely different light.

I saw "The King's Speech", and thought it was an amazing film. I can remember my parents listening to the speeches of King George VI and Winston Churchill on the radio, but didn't know why they were so important.

Well Colin Welland did famously announce 'The British are coming.' When he collected his Oscar for Charriots of Fire in 1982.

What he didn't say was they were coming by rowing boat.

British films and actors have received many nominations, since Colin Welland's infamous proclamation in '82.

Slumdog, Ghandi, Emma Thompson, Brendas Fricker and Blethyn, Daniel Day Lewis, Helen Mirren, Michael Caine, Julie Walters, Helena Bonham Carter, Nick Park.

The Brits are usually well represented most years.

But have you noticed that, whenever they cast a baddie in an American film, its always an Englishman.

Usually Gary Oldman.

If you watch the film you might feel differently. With his horrific speech impediment, even that attempt was a triumph.

Such a travesty that Geoffrey Rush missed out on an Oscar Best Supporting Actor. A truly wonderful piece of cinema. :)
