Downton fever has hit America -it's also on in Italy at the moment (first series -awful to watch it dubbed though). After winning 6 Emmy's will they win the Golden Globes this evening?

It seems even Vogue will be getting in on the act and doing a photographic service on Downton costumes. Big success all round which is good for British TV.

(My Xmas CD still hasn't arrived though -hope it isn't lost in the post!)

Got that a bit wrong - see photo attached from Vogue (link to full article)

Beautiful dresses -hate the modern hairdo's they've given the Downton girls.

Not getting type-cast then. Will look out for it

Saw on SKY that "Downton" has won Best mini-series at the Golden Globes and Kate Winslet best actress for Mildred Pierce.

Am looking forward to the second series of Boardwalk Empire which starts here on Friday evening.

My Downton Xmas CD still hasn't arrived - think it could have go lost in the post. I still dont know the ending ...do Lady M and M get back together, what about Bates, the list of questions is endless.

At this rate i'll be watching it at Easter:rolleyes::D

No clues, it'll spoil it for you.

All I'll say is that it'll leave you smiling.

You were right , of course, it did just that.:)

Kleenex not needed for final scene as it wasn't soppy at all, just rather beautifully written and staged.

Loved her dress, he looked gorgeous.

(Glad he didn't say "Will you marry me", Matthew is just so classy!)

Swirling snow, a fire in the grate to light the scene through the french windows into the house - perfect. The House itself took the stage, and rightly so, as the final shot panned out to show it all lit up in the snowy night.

Plenty of good story-lines to continue into the Roaring Twenties -looking forward to the next season already.:D

It seems that Series Three will have a new character in Lady Grantham's mother, to be played by Shirey Maclean. Should be a great new "foil" for the Dowager Duchess - I expect sparks will fly!

Shirley MacLaine To Join 'Downton Abbey' For Season 3

If, at some point, they decide to bring in a "father" for Lady G., I would suggest Warren Beatty -or would that be a bit incestuous? :D

Hoofer Shirl, versus Dame Mags?

Bring it on.

Don't know if it's the eighties revival thing, but I'm picturing them bitch slapping one another on the grand landing, before one's pushed down the stairs, in the manner of Krystle and Alexis Carrington Colby.

I remember they always used to take their earings off to answer the phone -didn't seem to bother for the cat-fights though!

This is one of the best -surely Dame Maggie will not lower herself to this level....:D

This is the curriculum Shirl sent to the producers of Downton -seems she's up for just about anything (to revive her flagging career) :D

Shirl's quite a gurl.

Near legendary status.

Favourite films Sweet Charity, and when she was a lezzed up school marm with Audrey Hepburn, in The Children's Hour.

There should be loads of mileage in this cultural clash.

I wouldn't like to bet on who the victor will be.

I saw Shirley MacLaine sometime in the 1970s in a show in Southport. My favourite film of hers is The Apartment.

I am. But I have heard a rumour that - for the next series - Lord Grantham & his family will lose Downton in 1925 and will be moving to a two-up-two-down terraced house in Accy. Has anyone else heard the same?

It's called down-sizing.:D

Have just pre-ordered the 3rd series on Amazon +complimentary diary. Have heard it's very good and my friend thinks I'll really like it -says it's better than the last series...:)

Re: Downton Abbey

I really enjoyed watching the Xmas special but have seen that it has been slated in the press and many thought it was too long. I suppose many were disappointed because it wasn't actually a Xmassy setting but I enjoyed the jaunt to Scotland and it has set up plenty of future story-lines which are obviously going to be followed up in the next series.

Had no inkling of Matthew's apparent demise so that was a bit of a shock ending but since he has once risen from being a paralytic maybe this time he'll be raised from the dead -that's if the actor gets a big enough incentive to stay on in the part.

susie123 27-12-2012 14:29

Re: Downton Abbey

I thought the Christmas special was very disappointing. Too long, too many new characters and having the story set in two different places made it very disjointed. And there wasn't much of a story and what there was was predictable - you just knew that something would happen to Mary and she would have the baby before the end of the episode. However Matthew's accident at the end came right out of left field but if that's all they can do to move the story on then I'm not sure it bodes well for the future of the series.

And please get rid of Rose -she's driving me mad already and adds little or nothing to the cast or story.
