The Money Drop
 

This new format quiz show from Endemol has just aired for the first time in Italy. Can't say it has blown me away and no-one has won anything yet...

The presenter is Gerry Scotti - the best game-show host/presenter in Italy, he has always presented "Who wants to be a Millionaire" which is actually the only Italian programme I watch. I think the new show is meant to take it's place.

Has it been on yet in the UK -is it a success? Was just wondering whether or not to give it another try or consider it a flop immediately...

We have one called 'The Million Pound Drop' over here presented by Davina McCall,if that is the same format? Basically couples choose a category & are then given a question with four possible answers, they have to then place money on what they think is the right answer although they can split the cash between up to three of the answers if they're not sure until when (or if) they get to the last round & they only have a choice of two answers & have to put all they have left on one of them.

No Dianne, the best gameshow host in Italy was Lenny Valentine, host of "Italian Stripping Housewives" in the 1990's.
Not sure what the show was about or if Lenny Valentine was the hosts real name, as it was in Italian with English commentary......but watched it anyway!!

That may be Umberto Smaila and the Cin-cin girls - a programme called Colpo Grosso (The Big Hit) -see attached photo!! Not that i have ever watched such programmes -and i listen to Radio Maria -the Vatican radio ....

Don't normally watch quiz/game shows even if I'm on them. Only exception is University Challenge. Oh and The Chase is quite good, have caught it a couple of times.

I'll watch any quiz as long as they're asking "proper" questions. A lot a gameshows seem to be based on luck these days - might as well flip a coin to decide the winner.
Uni is one of my faves as well but Anne & Rach hate it with a vengeance. On Monday night at our house you can usually hear the cry "I hate Jeremy Paxman!!" as Rachel tramps off to her room. Most of the questions are beyond me but it's an achievement getting any right.

Ya I'm into quiz's too steve, but the thing that really gets my goat are the programs that say they are running a competition (always on ITV) the likes of This Morning and Dickinsons Real Deal, they put a few grand up as a prize then ask the most pathetically easy questions, on the real deal they're more interested in the bloody competition that the show, this weeks attempt is for £20,000 the question is what are the Danube Thames and another, are they Mountains, Rivers or whatever, they spoil what could be a good show:mad:

I do have a fair bit of previous when it comes to quizzes but not since 2000.

In the 80s I was on Brain of Britain on Radio 4 with Robert Robinson, did 3 rounds and got within 2 points of a place in the finals. I also did Counterpoint, a music quiz on Radio 4 with Ned Sherrin, but didn't get past the first round.

Then in the 90s I did Fifteen to One on Channel 4 with William G Stewart. I did 3 rounds and one grand final plus being reserve for another grand final before being knocked out. That was good because he used to give out any spare cash from his budget in envelopes at the post final party - even if you were only a reserve! He took a liking to me and I did three pilot shows for him, none of which got any further. I did get to meet Jill Dando and Bradley Walsh though.

My final TV appearance was on Christmas Day 1999 when I was in the Millennnium edition of Fifteen to One, a show that seemed to go on for hours and must have bored the pants off lots of people that day. I didn't watch it.

Also in the 90s I was captain of a champion pub quiz team (3 PhDs and a lollipop man!) in the Salisbury League. We had quite academic questions, in rounds with proper subjects, and it was very well run. That's why I've not done any quizzing since leaving there in 2000, not found anything of the right standard if that doesn't sound too pompous.

Haven't tried Mastermind, couldn't think of any specialised subjects I'd want to mug up in such depth. Prefer GK - but not trivia!

Yeah, I thought there'd been a bit of a fuss a few years back about these dial-in quizzes and that they had or were going to ban 'em.
Think they make more on the premium rate phone calls than they give out in prize money....and as you say, they're an insult to our intelligence...!

The calls are £1-3p from a BT landline, mobiles cost considerably more, is what they say steve, during a 45 minute program (that's an hour less the adds) on the Real Deal, they give the comp details out 3 times, about 3 minutes a time, I don't like the sunburnt clown to start with, but between him and the flaming competition, they spoil what could be a good program:mad:

There was one on Eggheads last night Steve, even super brain Kevin got it wrong, what meat did Lizzy and phil have for their wedding diner back in 1953 Meat, Venison or Pheasant, how the hell anybody was supposed to know that god only knows, I said the same as Kevin, Venison, it was Pheasant

By the way Liz and Phil were married in 1947 or do you mean the coronation in 1953?

Behemoth - Behemoth is commonly identified as possibly being a sauropod dinosaur, the name has come to be used for any extremely large or powerful entity.

As I am just under 5fttall not sure that is apt but the dinosaur is better - the grey cells are becoming extinct and recall is getting harder.

The programme was on here in the 80's. He is the original sleaze ball though!

He now has a series of night clubs in top resorts -started on the Costa Smeralda in Sardinia. If you're interested he has a web site with (it's in English too) info about his clubs and a lot about the TV programme "Colpo Grosso" - it was quite Risqué for the 80's -looks quite tame now really:D

I also like a "proper" quiz with real questions. Have seen the Egg-heads in Tenerife with mum -she never misses it, it's quite a good format. Watched the Money Drop again yesterday evening but it's not my scene -too much luck and find the whole thing of seeing these people scrabbling about with "money" a bit degrading somehow.

Sue you really are a dark horse! As a seasoned quizzer you should have some sort of penalty on the Trivia quiz to give us mere mortals a chance...;):D

Does anyone remember the quiz they used to have on Crackerjack where they gave you cabbages if you got a question wrong?:eek::D

My penalty is advancing years and failing recall as haven't done much quizzing for ten years. Yes I remember Crackerjack but don't think I could work the mouse if I were holding a cabbage!

On Crackerjack didn't they used to load the kids up with toys & games and they could keep what they didn't drop.....or something like that!!

Yep -and the cabbages made it hard to hold onto the decent prizes!

As a consolation prize they used to give a Crackerjack pen and pencil set.

I bet they get better prizes these days on kids programmes...:D

Point taken, but you can't criticise something you don't read.

That was called double or drop on Crackajack.

I've been watching reruns of Bullseye which is a darts based quiz. You can't beat a bit of bully!!
