Who's the best film Tough Guy?

I thought I'd start this poll, personally I think you can't beat Clint Eastwood as the best film or TV tough guy actor.

What's your choice? If I've not named someone then please put their names down. ;)

Re: Who's the best film Tough Guy?

Think James Cagney took some beating, unlike Van Damme n Schwartz, he could act as well.;) Like Eastwood n Statham on yon.;) Mickey Rourke wasn't bad either.

Kirk Douglas, Spartacus.

Charton Heston, Planet of the Apes.

Richard Attenborough, Brighton Rock and The Great Escape,

Michael Caine, Get Carter, Mona Lisa.

Robert deNiro, almost everything he's done like wise Joe Pesci.

Al Pacino, Scarface...

I do like Clint though.

Boeing Guy 01-06-2012 06:53

Mmm I meant actors who's main output involves action/violence - Richard Attenborough only did a couple that I know of that did this type of film. Same with Michael Caine.

Have you seen Jason Statham "Transporter" series very tough films :D

Clint can say it all with a look though that's why I put him down as the best.

I've gone for Eastwood, my second choice would have been Steven Segal then Jet Lee

Re: Who's the best film Tough Guy?

I'd go for Richard Widmark with his haunting laugh.
or Edward G Robinson.

Re: Who's the best film Tough Guy?

Charles Bronson. "Do you believe in Jesus, well your going to meet him".

There is one I'm trying to remember, but his name keeps escaping me. He started his working life as a circus trapese artist, before moving into films.

Now Ive just typed all this his name came back so I've had to be quick on the edit button

Burt Lancaster

I had a soft spot for Robert Mitchum.
The roles he played weren't always 'action tough guy' but he had an action filled real life past as a boxer and time spent on a chain gang.

Yes ... Gene Hackman in "The Unforgiven":theband:

But I don't think Bruce Willis deserves any mention. Someone once said that Alan Ladd had two acting styles: Hat on, hat off. Willis does't have that kind of versatility, virtuosity and range.;) Can never figure out why he was cast in "Pulp Fiction"

Yeah, I kinda agree about the acting style of Bruce, but I guess Die Hard was one of the first films I ever watched that was pure action from start to finish with no stereotype simpering females, full of really funny one liners and Alan Rickman hamming it up like his life depended on it..

We are not giving out Oscars here you know :D Clint out did Gene Hackman in "The Unforgiven!" after all he killed him.

I don't get Bruce Willis really - cant manage the Diehard series.

Keanu Reeves is very good in the "Matrix Trilogy" and "Constantine".

And Cagney died at the end of White Heat, killed by a gas tank. Damn...out toughed by a pile of metal ;)

In my view Clint Eastwood encapsulates all those old Hollywood stars like Cagney and Mitchum and brings it into the more special effects era of Hollywood films - how many tough guys have you seen pulling a classic Eastwood face? Loads!:D

Ok you lost me now, unless you mean eclipses instead of encapsulates :)

Can't for the life of me recall an Eastwood film with special effects apart from the extremely dire Firefox ( I discount Tarantula :P).

Don't get me wrong, he's an excellent director, and has an uncanny knack for choosing the right films to make/star in, but his early stuff is really starting to look dated.

The Dirty Harry series and his Spaghetti westerns are not ageing well compared to the Cagney and Bogart stuff. Give me a choice of Angels with Dirty Faces, White Heat, Treasure of Sierra Madre, and Magnum Force..Clint is gonna come fourth.

Eastwood has made a fortune out of playing an anti-hero that is inherently a good guy...for me the best tough guys are usually the bad guys, it's why many actors take on those roles, because it gives them the scope to be nasty, evil and 'tough'.

De Niro in Godfather 2 and Heat, Tommy Lee Jones in The Executioners Song and Gene Hackman in Unforgiven.

For me, Clint wins this hands down....though Charles Bronson was a close second for me....

Some names that haven't been mentioned.....Lee Marvin, Henry Fonda & Lee Van Cleef. All played hard guy roles in various films....though Clint out trumps them on the sheer number of roles he's played in class films!!:)

There's been a run on the old Dirty Harry Films one Sky of late still watch um even though I must have seen them dozens of times, spaghetti westerns are on quite often too

Do you remember Henry Fonda's eyes when one of his men says his name in 'Once upon a time in the West' in front of the boy? Never seen eyes so cold and dead.

I watched High Plains Drifter few month back - really well put together, every character and line etc perfect film, about that says a lot about human nature. Also it's a ghost story! :D

Forgot to mention Danny Glover and Denzil Washington both have made excellent action movies such as "Predator 2" "Lethal Weapon" and for Denzil "Training Day!" and "Man on Fire!"

Not my favourite actor, but I thought Alan Ladd was superb in Shane. And I will give a nod to John Wayne for the Quiet Man and the Searchers.
