early hours moderator

hope ime not out of place here for suggesting an early hours moderator

until roughly 4 am this morning we had one of those special people join accy web who basicly littered the place with derogatory comments about oher members and personal threats towards them in the chat room and on the forum

dont wory ime not suggesting myself for the job :D but maybe one of the late night members could be given the power to delete threads or ban ip ranges/adresses so that if another dimwit was to join up accyweb could be safe for the kids to look at the next morning

i do think he actualy did get banned at one point but came right back and rejoined after whoever banned him went to bed

anyway will leave it with you guys coz if you do decide its a good idea to have a late night moderator good luck in choosing one they are all nuts :D

Re: early hours moderator

Oy chav who are you calling nuts????? ;) In fact I think I spent most of last eve pressing the "report" button. Obviously there was an invisible mod on as the original few threads were deleted. However, do think it is difficult to have a 24hr mod on here

chav1 21-09-2005 12:19

Re: early hours moderator

actualy ive had a re think on this matter because nearly all of the late chatters are women and we know how you girls are with computers :p

After last night a late niight Moderator is good but who would willingly volenteer and could the person involved not just go to another computer with a different IP and IP number?

even if they have another computer or dial up you can block ip ranges rather than one specific ip :D

Re: early hours moderator

Chav didnt know that could be done and will be filed away for future reference, anything to aviod a repeat of the carry on in the early hours again it sickened me to the core.

It wound me up last night I even considered ringing one of the mods up! How popular would I have been then???? ;)

I think its a good idea. The only thing is though finding someone to do it willing to be on at 4am in the morning!

Sorry I dont think its needed, that time in the morning its past watershed if you will & we are supposed to be adults.:)

Re: early hours moderator

An IP is assigned to the internet connection and not to the computer.. for example all the computers in one building at blackburn college can have the same IP address.. All the computers in an office building can have the same IP (this is the IP that can be recorden and not the local network)

Also for most individuals you get a new IP everytime you log onto the internet... if you block a range that would effect that user then you could be blocking all AOL or all BT users.

Also.. I can change my IP address every 5 minutes with an *anon* proxy.

So I am afraid IP address arn't much use to stop people unless they have a static IP .. some companies do.. I have a static IP but I have to pay extra for it and very few providors give them as standard... Demon used to in the early days...

You stop them by kicking them off.. they have to go get a new email and sign up again and you kick them off agian until they get bored of it.. that is the only way to stop someone who is persistant..

Wingy sorted him out when I PM'd him at about 6.30am this morning

WINGY 21-09-2005 14:36

Re: early hours moderator

I did but he was also using another name or names that had been banned while i was working and you guys were asleep..
Between us we don't do too bad, as mthead said, its after watershead, but on the other hand if there are no mods online, it could stil be there when someones 10 year old logs on before school..... Its a tough one, but thankyou to all that pressed the report button, or pm'd don't be scared thats what its there for!!

Neil 21-09-2005 14:40

Re: early hours moderator

What if someones posting rights were frozen if more than 2 or 3 people reported a post between say midnight and 8am. A mod could check the reason in the morning and unfreeze. I know some people might think it was fun it freeze people but abuse of the system could be punished by a temporary ban for the abuser or something.

what is easy to forget though is things typed at 4am or whatever time of the night are still gonna be here at 7am unless caught by a moderator

through my school life i was up at 6 for my paper rounds and i dare say some kids have a quick surf before setting off on their paer rounds etc

i wasnt suggesting somone to moderate over the late night people but it would be handy having somone who could deal with it if needed

everyone has banter and comes out with some pretty disgusting stuff in the chat late at night but this guy was beyond a joke and was infact downright disgusting towards 3 female members that i can think of and if i remember correctly threats towards 1 members property were made and although i highly doubt he would have the balls to set fire to a shop a young woman may not be as comfortable with it as a man would be ( not saying women are wimps of course )

all i was suggesting is that if an idiot like this does come on that we have some measure to get rid of them and thier posts before seen by the decent folk , granted these idiots dont come along often but when it gets to the point where a member is getting upset by anothers actions with just cause then the offender needs booting asap

anyway its not my place to say whats what i was just making a suggestion :)

Re: early hours moderator

I used to be a moderator on a message board (which sort of fizzled out through lack of interest in the subject matter) and I was the silly fool, er volunteer, who logged in first thing in the morning to cover such eventualities. It didn't happen often but we did once get a spate of idiots registering just to post filth and abuse.

Hopefully it won't happen often on here but even if the place was manned (or womanned) 24/7 you could still end up missing something.

Wishing the mods all the best in dealing with such hassle.

if the moderators have done a good job and sorted it out during the night then whats the problem... why are ya trying to fix summat that seems to be working.... just a wondering :)

Re: early hours moderator

Good idea, maybe? We do have members on here that reside on the other side of the world and to them it won’t be a grave yard shift because as we sleep they will be in their daytime and visa versa.
But to be honest thou for the amount of times that this sort of thing happens, which is quite rare I don’t think that this is necessary, it will probably be quite boring for anyone who has to visit the forums when everyone here is in bed.
Best thing is I recon, is to just report the offence via the report button and leave for the mods to sort the next day, with everyone’s help, and it is appreciated we can keep on top of this. Another thing that may help is, don’t reply to any of their posts as this may only encourage them even more.
cheers.

dont think its practical for the mods, but the instance last night wouldnt have made much differance with not answering - you didnt get chance to answer the screen was constantly full of rubbish for about 20 mins.

Re: early hours moderator

Thank you to sorting it out.

For those who mised all the 'fun', he was a complete idiot who used the forum to attack two female members in a very nasty and personal way.

Hoping he never darkens our forum door again.:)

May I suggest the next time this happens in the chat room shiny, just make a private room. Then only invite the people you want into the private room and leave the idiot on his/her own in the lounge. You can then carry on insulting and talking the mick out of each other without interuption :D

As far as someone using your nickname, that is a little bug in the chat room software. Make sure you do not use white colour for your text. The 'fake' messages are always the system colour - the same as when it says things like 'neil has entered the Lounge at'. Then people can tell it is not you if your set as a colour and a message appears in white.

I am on every morning at 7-45am but if anything happens at night i am not botherd about getting a phone call at 3am if there is a problem
but please it must be something serious.
hope this helps everyone.
I have had phone calls before of members when there is something wrong on site so its no problem.
So if anything happens again like that in the chatroom or in the forum anywhere and there is no moderator around then by all means please phone me !!

RIGHT THE PEOPLE WHO NEED TO HAVE MY NUMBER WILL BY NOW HAVE IT SO I HAVE EDITED IT OUT .
IF THERE IS A PROBLEM THEN PLEASE PHONE ME THANKS.

IF YOU DID NOT GET MY NUMBER AND WANT IT THEN PLEASE PM ME AND I WILL LET YOU HAVE MY MOBILE NUMBER

Re: early hours moderator

Neil... the prob was he was also starting multiple offensive threads in general chat and I can assure you they were threads you wouldn't want your kids to read. In chat we could handle him by doing the private room as you said but we all felt powerless on the main forum. Although a few of us did hit the report button but obviously it was a while before it was sorted.

Mick... was very tempted to ring you but thought 3am was pushing it a bit!! cheers anyway thats good to know for future reference.

PLEASE NOTE PEOPLE THE ISSUE WASN'T CHAT IT WAS THE MAIN FORUM WHERE HE WAS CREATING REALLY OFFENSIVE, PERSONAL THREADS.

mick .. If I was you I would give a list of things NOT to phone about... page wont load. PM box full, accyweb slow, how do you spell this or that.. what time is it there.. whats the weather like ....its spitting! :)

brilliant offer mick... thats dedication.. but some peoples concept of an emergency might not be yours :)

garinda 22-09-2005 08:15

Re: early hours moderator

Yes he was offensive in chat, that could be handled and he got as good as he gave.

Like Red said it was the highly personal abusive threads he made in the names of female members that were the real problem. Personal and littered with swear words, not the sort of thing that should be left for long for all and sundry to read, including children.

i think this all kicked off in the first place was because we didnt let him in the private room!!!! (because he was acting silly!!) he wasnt being nasty in the chat room!!! he was posting really nasty things on the threads!!!!!

Do you think it might have been that guy from the other day who was banned? He might have come in under a different name.

I know I read them all at 6am the following morning just before I PM'd Wingy who I noticed was online.

If someone is causing problems on site then it IS best if you dont answer the posts just report it or phone me.
answering there posts only makes it and them worse.
