Photo Competition

A lot of people now have digital camera's
I was thinking of doing a monthly photo competition - no prizes, just for the fun of it
If it goes ahead I will select a couple of people to help me judge it, options are yes, no and judge if you would like to help me judge it - if you judge it you wont be able to enter it
I have selected judge because obviously I wont be able to enter myself
I will set a theme for each month
Are YOU interested?

I will keep the poll open for 10 days

WillowTheWhisp 11-03-2006 21:09

Re: Photo Competition

Yes

Sounds like a great idea. I love taking photos but not sure I'd be able to enter every month but would still love to see other people's too.

K.S.H 11-03-2006 21:13

Re: Photo Competition

I forgot to tick the box where it shows who has voted for what :-(
If you selected judge can you please post it here as well so I know who to ask

Thats what I come up with this morning, it will be like this
I will judge the 1st one to get it going then the winner will pick a theme and judge that one, that way everyone will get to enter and also get a chance to judge one

harwood red 12-03-2006 10:36

Re: Photo Competition

sounds a good and fair way of doing it. So come on when does it start, whats the first category and when do the pics have to be in and do we post them on this thread or will there be a section in the gallery to put them in??

I was waiting to see what sort of interest we get 1st, so far it looks like there's only 9 of us
The poll runs for 10 days, lets see what happens
I think we'll leave it as a monthly comp so that gives people plenty of time to take the pics if they haven't already got one suitable.
Will post the pics on here unless we get told by Roy to do it somewhere else, please keep file sizes down though, we dont want to push Roy's bandwidth through the roof :)

Got a camera phone, yes, but images not too good. How ya' get into your computer anyway ?

Scanned images, well, yes, however, too much bother, have to use whole film, get developed take down to brother who scans and sends down to me. Ok negative. I know.

Re: Photo Competition

Some digital cameras are quite cheap these days. I'm surprised at the results I can get from my pocket camera. (an eBay bargain) If we're keeping file sizes small that will keep people on a more equal level too. :)

KSH, an absolutely great idea. I'll have to look into it but our gallery software actually has a feature specifically for photo competitions, I'll read up on how it works, perhaps we can use this for the competition?

Re: Photo Competition

anyone intersted in a decent digi camera a bloke at work is selling a Fuji s5500 (similar to Micks). He has it up at £160 but has been advertising it for a couple of weeks now so I reckon you could probably get it for 140/150.

10 x optical zoom, choice of full auto or full manual. takes XD cards

I'm up for teh comp as well

Re: Photo Competition

I'd give him a hundred for it, it's 200 new delivered with warranty.
Think a comp is a great idea there's no obligation to enter every month, and a whole month to find a pic. I've took some great pics on my phone. The main dissadvantage with a camera phone is most are 1 M pixel and you haven't got a zoom, but it's what you take that counts, and neither affect that, it's only for fun.

entwisi 12-03-2006 19:05

Re: Photo Competition

Aye, checked ebay since I posted, reckon £100-120 is about right. BIL is interested if I can get him down to that. I shall see tomorrow.

16-0 on the vote, I reckon you should start thinking of the first subject

Len 12-03-2006 19:52

Re: Photo Competition

Great idea, count me in.

We could set up a competition category in the Gallery and each month add a new album.
Member would be able to up load their images there at around 800pixels wide etc.
It might be an idea if those taking part also upload several entries into any one competition thus making the albums more interesting to view. As for judging we’ll have to see what Roy comes up with.

Len 12-03-2006 21:26

Re: Photo Competition

I’ve done some tests in the gallery and it looks as though what we’ll have to do is;

At the start of each competition/month or whatever anyone who wishes to take part in the competition can upload their photos to the named album. Then at the end of the month when everyone has uploaded their images we the Mod’s/Admin can enable the voting to take place.

The reason for not allowing anyone to vote from day one is that each member can only make one vote in each of the competition categories (albums). So if you make a vote before all the entries are in you may well find that a better image comes along at a later date and because you have already voted you will not be able to change your mind and vote again.
So I think its best that we don’t allow voting until a given date and after all entries are in.

There maybe a better way of doing this, so we’ll have to see what Roy comes up with.

Thanks for that KSH
I hadn’t realized while doing my tests in mod mode that members can actually clear their vote and revote. Nice one that will make life much easier. Hehe :)

I’ve moved the photo competition category from the index page in the Gallery to;
Index page ->> Miscellaneous Albums ->> Accyweb members photo competitions.

Just thought it would be better out of sight. :)

You saying that our pictures are that bad :) :)

No problem, will the voting be on all the time or just when you close the comp and turn voting on?
I'm thinking when the comp closes we need to find a winner pretty soon because he/she will be choosing the theme for the following comp, so its either leave the voting on all the time and set a deadline for votes to be in (I did try the canceling of votes and re-voting when you put the test on and it worked OK, handy if someone changes their mind), or run the comp for 3 week and have a week to let people vote

It appears that we can leave the voting option on for the duration of the comp as this would give everyone as you say the option of changing their minds if a better image pops along and tickles their fancy. Hehe

What I will do is turn the voting option off when the dead line has been reached this would prevent anyone from moving their vote at a later date thus making the winner look like a none winner (fooling around) etc. hehe

I think it would be good idea if we could also hide the identity of the photos owner while the voting is taking place. By doing this no one would know whose photo they are voting for and hopefully prevent favouritism. I think there’s an option in the gallery admin cp were as you can select show or don’t show but the trouble is, this effects all the images in the gallery and we don’t wont to do that.
Perhaps Roy knows of a hack that could sort this for us. :)

Len 13-03-2006 22:14

Re: Photo Competition

Just had a look through the Admin cp and unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be an option to hide the up loaders name, pity..... but I’m sure we’ll cope. :D

Far doo's but who is going to draw them up and is there to be catagories?

entwisi 14-03-2006 08:54

Re: Photo Competition

proposed Rules are:

1 Someone posts a subject(last times winner nominates)
2 we have 2 weeks to take pictures and upload
3 everyone registered can vote for 2 weeks
4 most vote wins, a tie is decided by a Judge

job done

All in favour?

Mick 14-03-2006 09:01

Re: Photo Competition

5) all pictures must be your own work
6) no pics to be scanned from mags etc
7) your copyright to a pic stays with you.

Len 14-03-2006 19:00

Re: Photo Competition

Ok then, I think these will be the rules;

Quote:

Rules;

1 K.S.H posts a subject and there after last times winner nominates new subject.
Try and keep the subject simple and easy as it’s just for fun and not everyone is a photo genius,
the more adventurous subjects can be done at a later date when we’ve got the hang of things.

2 Depending on the subject we will have one month to take pictures and upload them.
After the closing date the voting will be disabled.

3 Any Accyweb member can vote if they so wish.

4 The image with most votes wins; a tie will be decided by a Judge?
Not sure about the judging bit, perhaps there’s a better way.

5 All pictures must be your own work and not copied.

6 The image size needs to be around 800pixels wide and within about 100k or so.
Don’t worry about the size of your image if its too big as the software in the Gallery will reduce it down to the correct size but if its really massive like 3 or 4meg etc then it may take a while for the image to be uploaded.
Little pictures won’t really do because they don’t show much detail but if you have no choice then sod it and use them anyway. Alternatively have a look at your camera settings and see if you can select bigger files.

KSH when your ready you can start the competition off.
Create a new thread in the “Photoshop, Digital Photography, Digital Imaging” forums if everyone is happy? :)
