Re: Acronyms

When communications by computers started it was costing a heck of a lot more than it does now. The way to do it would be to log on, download your messages. read and reply to them offline then log back on and post them.

For every minute (in some countries seconds) you where online it costs you money. especially during the day and mostly it wasn't a local call.

Thus the bigger the message the longer it took to download or post. So acronyms where used to shorten the message and save money. The internet also had an unwritten rule that any sig over 4 lines long would get you flamed (hate mail) and even banned from some systems... same if you posted more quoted message then you had written.. some email software would not post a message if there was more quote than response.

When SPAM startd everyone would report it to the SPAMMERS service providor to have them banned beause it was a "Theft of Service" because you where paying to recieve an advert.. Imagine the postpman charges you COD for a letter only to find its an advert. or you get an imnportant reverse charge phone call that turns out to be a man selling double glazing.... well spam on the internet was on a par..

A lot of us still through habit work as above.. I use acromyns but have tried to slow them down as most dont know what they mean anymore.. i hate spam but gave up reporting it yrs ago.. I still quote my emails correctly ..

What bugs me is the wrong use of acromyns... I mean a certain female poster would have us believe she is peeing herself laughing with every line she writes on accyweb... I hate the use of LOL and have never used it myself.. really annoys me... a smile saya it all..

Re: Acronyms

I do actually 'lol' sometimes at some posts or even at some emails and in such cases I will happily say that I am lol (please note it is never 'lolling')

Are there really people who don't know the intended meaning of these commonplace acronyms?

cul8r is text talk... as for common.. its relative to how long you ahve been on the internet.. as I tried to explain.. there only common because there the only ones you and accywebbers know in this community :)

My common list is around 20+ regularly used.. some i thought where real common but I still get asked what As far as I know and IIRC mean...and IMHO and well loads...

Re: Acronyms

We were just talking about acronyms tonight and recalling how Jimmy Young used to sign off his radio show with TTFN so they're not just related to t'internet.

I apologise for cul8r which is indeed text talk and not permitted here on AccyWeb.

The acronyms are very useful though because they crop up all over the net.

hmm I remember all that.. but did he get it off the internet? will be a close run thing.. the internet is 30+ years old... bbs systems that preceeded most of what we now know as the internet is i dunno how old..

WillowTheWhisp 04-01-2007 21:55

Re: Acronyms

I don't honestly know where Jimmy Young got it from but my Gran used to say it and she'd never seen a computer in her life let alone been online. She died about 40 years ago.

Surely there are acronyms which aren't internet related.

KIPAX 04-01-2007 22:00

Re: Acronyms

of course... i was just wondering as old jimmy used to say that x yrs ago... he might have been a bit of a techno whatsit...

you could and probably still can access the internet by wireless... just to be clear.. what everyone has now isnt connecting to the internet by wireless its still phone lines.. but you could do it by ham radio....

It's only a few years ago I worked with a bloke who used packet radio. It is more of a BBS type system that true internet IIRC.

I can't remember if I first used BBS's using my Acorn Atom or an old CP/M machine I had ( I think that was the one with 8" floppies :D ). I do remember the modem was probably as big as the Atom was :D

From here

Quote:

The characters use the radio sign-off "F.A.B." rather than "Roger" or "Over and out". Anderson was often asked what F.A.B. stood for, but in fact it simply stood for "fab" (short for "fabulous"), a 1960s catchphrase.

Kids being the right word.

I bet the Atom and CP/M machine are still at my parents. There is an old 8088 PC there that still works. I would not be surprised if there are some 8" floppies still un-opened :D

A super speedy phone line? I remember switching over to a higher baud for connecting to a computer. It's all a very vague and woolly dim and distant memory now. Feels like a different lifetime.
