Quotations are messing up

Quotations in replied postings are going a bit funny, either not quoting full quote ie name of quote not the name of quoter before. Seems to be happening a lot lately on most forum threads as well as stanley forum too. Not a major problem unless like i found it misquotes who said what so gets confusing:confused:

Re: Quotations are messing up

It looks like people are deleting the square brackets of the quotation tags when they are editing out bits from the quotes.

Re: Quotations are messing up

I haven't done that & it still does it now & again - weird unless its been done further down the line:confused:

Re: Quotations are messing up

If you're quoting somebody who has already done it, or who is quoting somebody who has already done it then the closing tags are all messed up and it regards the last one as relating to the previous quote because the previous one related to the one before that etc until you get to the one with the faulty edit.

Ah right so thats what causing it:D

Everyone make note of not removing the [ or ] around the quotes if editing, buggers it up in sequence after:D

Re: Quotations are messing up

to try and clear it up let me explain 'tags'

a start tag is "[XXXXX]" (Whatever XXXXX is is variable, you can use it for fonts, colours or in this case QUOTE. It must have a corresponding end tag "[/XXXXX] "or it breaks.

If you embed tags within tags you must keep them in a strict hierarchy

e.g.

"[XXXXXX][YYYYY]" must be closed [/YYYYYY][/XXXXX]" as teh YYYYs must be encapsulated by the XXXXXs

It's known as 'nesting' - bit like those Russian dolls.
