Not half as gutted as i was when the server was moving at a crawl, not half as gutted as i was when i had to work half the night moving us to a new faster server! Not half as gutted as I am that I don't actually get paid for any of this!!

Am posting this here because the matter of finances has been touched on. I think that no way should Roy be out of pocket as they say to present to us this great site on which there is something to suit all tastes. Therefore I propose that we contribute an annual amount, just how much can be debated. Even the lowly sum of a pound would bring in a decent amount.

I know a pound may sound a trivial amount and I would be willing to contribute more but I made that initial amount on the basis of Member numbers. Now I do realise that not all members do regular postings so I reckon, by concensus, that some amount can be arrived at to help Roy.

Will try my best Bert as i think it's a great idea, only thing is i can only moderate on the motoring section. I'm sure if i start a thread one of the mods on that section will do any moderating required.
As for payment from abroad i don't know if anyone uses paypal, but you can make a payment of any amount to any person with am email address, and it doesn't cost anything ( i dont think) :-)

It's an easy and safe way of sending cash.

Paypal is OK but the receiver pays commision, the ones that are free to the receiver are Fastpay (run by natwest, but anyone can have an account) and Nochex which works the same as Paypal

I would be willing to make a donation, however it is set up, as I am sure all the regular posters would.
Paying per X number of posts? That would deter new posters and penalise the ones that make a large number of quality posts, IE Lettie and Atarah.
If that happened I certainly wouldn't use the site anymore. These things should be free.
I don't mind more advertising, possibly sponsorship from local firms.
Re the idea of fundraising, I don't see how that would work, can't see where we would raise funds for a website (apart from it's users & we already covered that bit), unless from businesses and ultimately that would amount to advertising suely?

Just by way of comparison, about a year ago I signed up on one of these on-line dating sites. The cost was £15.99 a month and in return I met up with about three oddballs per month (I never met anyone normal)...that lasted about three months.

This site provides far more enjoyment - and there does'nt appear to be any oddballs when we meet up. It's all for free. So I certainly would'nt mind donating a couple of quid per month. But I do think the amount should be voluntary & confidential, with maybe donors being flagged up as such. If it's a case of payment per post, then I think I'll have to go out and win the lottery PDQ>

Right lets sort this out i have been speaking to Roys dad about this and he said it would not work.
1) he said roy would not exept it
2) the idea of sponsorship from local firms is the best way and we have already talked about this but are wateing for Roy to come back to see if the software will do what we want
3) Roys dad said that if people payed to use the site then the site would belong to them not roy he would be working for them and being payed .
DONT get me wrong i would be the first inline to pay Roy for all the work he has done.
also think about the tax man looking on the site.
also if people payed to use the site it would put them off comming on or new members
and we dont want that DO WE?
it could also start a lot of argueing ie i have payed to use this site i want this game on or that game on .
I have also been round to 1 or 2 firms and they would be glad to sponser the site ie
we advertise there firm they give us 10% discount 5% to members 5% to the site .
but will have to see if it can work

Seems very sad and pathetic to me to think that by sending a donation to help anyone would want to dictate what went on the Forum. Still, it takes allsorts as they say. I will be upset if Roy returns my donation.

The people that are offering are doing it out of the kindness of there hearts.
We are certainly not trying to dictate what goes on at accyweb, the idea was purely a discusion of ways to POSSIBLY help somebody who we have a lot of respect for.

I will go with majority decision on this one.I know a lot of people who view the site but don't post,and a payment to use it would certainly stop them doing this.It's supposed to be a forum for the whole community so sponsorship from a local firm or 2 would seem the ideal solution...Hollands?Marshalls? :D

Tell me if im wrong but this was just an idea to help Roy and the site out. Nobody has mentioned you HAVE to give any money. People who are willing and want to help then thats their own personal choice. Not only doing a fund raiser would we be able to raise money yet we could also have a great laugh and get the site involved in doing something different, its all more publicity for the site.

Yes Pussycat, that was my thinking when I first mentioned some form of financial support for Roy. Had never any thought that there would or should be a compulsory membership fee. Just seemed wrong that the lad was having to dig into his own pocket to run the Forum. And goodness me, how on earth can the Inland Revenue get involved with individuals just sending a private contribution ?

Seems we are getting contradictory posts here! Roy's dad has said it's a no no you say, so why don't we just wait until Roy is around and see what the situation is? Might be a good idea?:D
I also take offence at the fact that you are now suggesting if we don't turn up at King St with a donation we don't support the site! that we haven't any excuse for calling in, well yes, I'm afraid some of us have.

I also don't like the fact that those of us who didn't turn up at the Christmas party were considered not supportive of the site - utter rubbush.

I have to agree with cazzer about not turning up suggesting that we don't support the site. I also see Micks point about people saying they would turn up and not doing.
In one post we are being told NO and then next we are being told to bring the money or else we don,t support the site. This is getting blown way out of preportion, an idea was suggested to try to do Roy a favour, only Roy can make the decision whether he likes the idea or not!

This is good this is. Roy turns his back for five minuits and it looks like world war three is about to break out.

Sponsership is probably the best way to go if it can be sorted.
You were talking about donations and donating via paypal or what ever and like I said i would be perfectly willing but I dont think Roy would want or exept money from us.
This is his baby.
Fundraising is a good idea in theory but putting it into practise is another thing.
Mick was just trying to be helpfull in sugesting that if anyone wanted to make a donation they could do so at the Easter meeting.
I personally dont know why he bothered after the Christmas fiasco when he was left out of pocket and gutted that appart from the select few the people of Accy couldn't be bothered to even pop their faces round the door.
The Christmas do wasn't his idea but the idea of a certain member. Who didn't turn up either.

Yes, exactly, this is Roy's site, so it's not for anyone else to tell members what they should be doing as regards the finances of the forum is it?
I don't doubt Mick was doing it for the right reasons, but it really isn't his place to suggest people come to a certain place at a certain time, or post money off, therefore proving their commitment to the site, is it?
And besides, it had already been stated by him previously that it was not an option! Confusing. :confused:

Regarding the party, you really can't make people do what they don't want to do. Just because they post on here doesn't mean they have to meet up. I'm really sorry you lost money and feel let down by certain people, but it was always a risk you took, and nothing to do with the majority of us.

Hi everybody,

ok lets try to get things a little bit calmer than they appear to be at the moment, in the first place on this site I am known as Less NOT Roy's dad. Secondly I have absolutely no authority whatsoever about what does or does not go on on this site, Roy will make any decisions that he deems necessary when he gets back from Russia (no doubt taking into account the advise given to him by the administrators etc.).

To expand on what Mick & I discussed the other day i would like to submit the following:-

NONE of the following has been discussed with Roy, so what was quoted above was my opinion & nothing at all official.

1) I did say that I thought Roy would not except this for precisely the reasons that have shown up in recent posts on this topic
a/ It could easily cause friction between fellow members.
b/ It would create all of the difficulties that have emerged as to how & how much it would be fair to for members to pay.

2) The idea of sponsorships from local firms this, could be a real advantage to Roy, members & local business as a whole as could the recent adverts that Roy has placed on the site at present.

3) My thoughts towards people paying to use the site are based firstly on the priciple that so far as I know Roy wants the site to have freedom of accessibility to ALL members, if we had paying & non paying members would there be parts of the site deemed only for the exclusive use of those that pay? Also, if the site is left in Roys capable hands then important decisions can be dealt with quickly otherwise I can see the formation of the accyweb committee which would slow things down worse than the old servers Roy has upgraded us from.

So far as anything else is concerned I think that we should note that this all started when someone enquired as to where their posts had gone & that they would have to re-submit them. Roy replied along the lines of (this is not an exact quote), you think you've got problems I've got the whole site to sort out! Knowing Roy's sense of humour that was probably said & should have been accepted as just a little bit tongue in cheek.

Until Roy can either get back on site or until he returns from Russia can I suggest that we put this topic on hold until we can hear direct from the horses mouth because all this in fighting is no good for any of us.

Sorry to have gone on for so long in this post but I hope we can all get back to the way things should as quickly as possible.

Mick, I don't think you should resign as a moderator. You do a good job, which we are all very grateful for, and I hope that I will still be seeing you at the Easter meet up. Everybody who has posted in this thread, did so with good intentions, whether we agree with each other or not. This website would be a pretty boring place to be, if we all had the same opinions, and it is the contribution of different opinions and experiences that make a site such as this so interesting and fun. I think we should close this thread now.

Mick - I'm glad you have decided to stay as moderator.

Unfortunately, the first mention of money has turned everyone crazy. If anyone would like to make a donation that should be up to them. Yes Roy started this website, but it wouldn't be here if no one posted. At least give the opportunity to let people choose to pay a donation of any amount whenever they feel. I agree that a paypal a/c would be the best option. I think more "heated debates" could be caused if it was up to one person to collect money at meetings.

don't worry about it, any-one of us could have asked those questions, the result from it is that we have all had a thread that gave us plenty to think about & in our own ways have come to the same conclusion, Accyweb is worth discussing, arguing about & finally enjoying each others company on!

Just one final comment from me on this thread. No way am I going to pay to Pay-Pal ( whoever he/she is) and no way am I going to pass any money to a third party. If I feel like forwarding a donation as a thank-you to Roy then I will do that, and if, for whatever reason Roy declines it and returns it then I will accept that also.
