Karma............. Up Your Bum

Can I have my Karma switched off or at least if people decide to leave me some good/bad I know who they are instead of the cowards who leave negative comments without being brave enough to tell me who they are, If you don't like a post I don't mind constructive criticism (I do really but who cares :) ) but just to leave some cryptic message is a pain in the ass.

Rant Over Take Care All You Nice People

100% agree with you Shurm it's getting out of hand. I have had a lot of bad karma aimed at me over past days and people don't even have the guts to put who they are in the stament when giving you bad karma. I am getting bad karma not a lot of the time but recnt which has statements like arrogant and all that well i'm not bothered if the karma is dished out but put who its from ffs.

It's a load of garbage

Once again the subject of karma has arrisen..
Smithy i can assure you that karma is not garbage.. our admin has taken time out to put things like this on the site at his own expense!!!
If you read the notices posted in ALL forums you will see that our asministrator is not able to get online at the moment, and this makes it hard to resolve any problems, i'm sure he has plans for the karma system, and when he finds time between working 7 days a week and trying to spend time with his family, he will do his best to make it better for ALL of us!!

There rant over:)

I didnt mean that the whole system was garbage, what I meant was that people who dont bother to put their name after the message they leave when giving you bad karma is the bad thing.

If you are giving karma out you should have to state your name after the karma's message. This would make it more worthwile.

It's certain people on here that are ruining the karma system by not treating it as its meant to be used.

Just a suggestion

I agree with you, I've recently lost a few points after the Kipax thread and all three lost karma points where anonymous, some people have no b*lls.

Re: Karma............. Up Your Bum

Roy did mention a system where you can see who's given you or taken karma some time ago, but obviously hasn't had time to do it yet. I think it would be a good idea and am willing to pay a subscription for it. At least if I give bad karma I admit it (only done it once)

I couldn't agree more, Shurm. here are my thoughts written two weeks ago, when a thread was becoming rather fractious, and accusations were being traded.

This system would allow people to know the reasons why karma has been issued or detracted, and would preclude the forum degenerating into a squabble and negate a verbal 'night of the long knives'. All I'm asking is for people to stand up and be accountable for their karma convictions, instead of this perceived sniping, in certain instances.

Yes smithy jsut like u didnt leave ur name when taking my karma pionts for a post i made just because it wasnt how u feel about it this is a forum to express OUR OWN feelings and i think it is wrong that u critisise people who dont Comlpy with ur point of view

I feel better now thats of my chest but i suppose i should wave bye bye to some more karma points!!!!

Re: Karma............. Up Your Bum

That's the problem with anonymous karma - people assume they know who it's from when they don't and that causes ill feelings. I had someone deduct karma from me with the added comment "here, have some of your own taken and see how you like it" presumably assuming that I had taken some of theirs and merely doing it in retaliation. Nothing to do with the post itself. If anything makes a mockery of the system a childish attitude like that certainly does.

That's exactly the point I was making! :(

Deducting (or to use Gobsmacked's word "snaffling") Karma from someone just because they've taken from you or "not giving back" to someone for the same reason is not a valid reason. Karma is supposed to be a reaction to your opinion of the particular point made in a post. It's not supposed to be "you took one off me so I'm taking one off you". That's just silliness. I can disagree with someone on one topic and yet agree with them wholeheartedly on something else. Being able to disagree with a point of view and yet still able to discuss other topics with the same person is hopefully the mature attitude of most of the members of AccyWeb.

Unfortunately there are some who don't seem to be able to act that way which is their loss.

Who was it who said "I may disagree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it"? (or words to that effect) Hopefully we can all learn to develop a more mature attitude to karma and use the points system wisely.

Re: Karma............. Up Your Bum

I think we should know who has raided our Karma.
If their name gets added automatically, it would make it a lot easier for me and others to go to their ranch and steal some of theirs, plus I would wait a few days and then go steal some more.

Sometimes you get and sometimes you get got.

Re: Karma............. Up Your Bum

All good fun this karma system, donīt you think? If we didn`t have karma we wouldn`t have all these fun conversations about karma. But then, I suppose I would enjoy it more than the rest of you because I can read the whole lot and see who really has given it and taken it... I can also see that some people who preach that you should leave your name, don`t. It was also amusing to see that smiffy16 was one of the only people on the forums who hasn`t given steve bad karma, yet still got the blame!!

Anyway, looking at it from an overall point of view.. Would it not take the fun out of the karma system if they where not anonymous? Would people still use it the same?

The system is in place already to allow me to let you see who gave the karma. But as lettie mentions, I think this should be a paid for thing to raise money for a new site design, what do you all think and how much is it worth?

WillowTheWhisp 11-11-2004 16:09

Re: Karma............. Up Your Bum

I don't really mind the system as it is now apart from when people simply play silly beggars and take it from somebody because:
a) they simply don't like the person regardless of the content of the post
b) they do it as tit-for-tat to someone they think took karma from them.

'b' is bad enough if it is done to the person who did dock their karma because it's a dumb reason, but when it's done to someone who never touched the other person's karma it's flippin annoying.

As for paying for the changes - this is where you can get problems because you can't force people to pay. So some may choose to pay and others won't but then all will get the benefit and you could end up with people who have paid resenting those who haven't becaue they are getting it for free. I've seen it happen on a message board I used to help admin. It was down to a request for contributions to keep it ad-free and oh boy did that lead to complaints and accusations against the board owner of being a money grabber. Such petty squabbles eventually led to the demise of the board.

One thing which I found the members definitely didn't like was discovering that things they believed to be anonymous turned out not to be. For instance someone said that post reporting was anonymous but it isn't. The "staff" know who reports a post even if the original poster doesn't. That isn't anonimity.

Back to the subject of Karma, it's a bit frustrating sometimes to have to wait 24 hours or spread it around more because I wanted to give some to a post a coupe of days ago and by the time I could do I forgot which post it was. Maybe I should have written a note and stuck it to my monitor to remind me.

Also sometimes it's safer to give negative karma anonymously simply because people get miffed and do a tit-for-tat like I said earlier without the post they use really justifying it.

Hope that makes sense.

Out of interest are you the only one who can read who gave karma Roy or have the moderators got the same access ? As I'm constantly being told by one of the mods I don't know the whole story of what goes on behind the scenes, what I would like to know is do they?

Do you also read private PMs and do the moderators have access to them.

If the karma system is so much fun why not put it to some sort of vote and see what feedback you get.http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/a...1&d=1133725152

EEErrrrr.....Yes....or No....or

Anyway the Karma system can be taken or left alone. I think it's quite OK to give Karma, if you wish to express your approval of a post. Negative Karma I use very sparingly indeed.....Everybody has their own point of view. But somebody who tries to be nasty or implies nastiness would (if I think it so bad) get a bit of negative Karma, but it has to be an extreme case.

So carry on Roy...leave it as it is!

By the way...I now sign mine!

When you joined you automatically had 10 karma points. Right now you've got 12 which means you've been given two extra, which is positive. If you check your profile you'll see the posts where you gained the karma, and the reasons why.

Hey!!!
Some yellow belly has rustled some of my Karma in this thread.
They left this message.
“Up Y...”
Anyone knows what it means.
Maybe it is a good idea to have names added to the karma automatically, just to stop these yellow bellies from playing childish games.

Anyways, looks like I’ve been got.

This system would make it so that if you paid, you would get to see who gave you karma, if you didn`t pay then things remain the same. So it`s kind of like a pay for more features thing, which I don`t really like the idea of...

Well we have never (as far as I know) claimed that anything was totally anonymous. Reporting the post creates emails to all moderators + makes an automatic post in the moderators forum which displays the user who has reported it. So it isn`t anonymous at all.

There is only me that has access to the karma comments, nobody else has ever seen them or has access to them.

Quote:

No I do not read private PMīs. There is no `simple`way of reading pm`s built into the software, although a mod for the software has been released it has not been installed here. I could access the database directly, but I feel no need to go through peoples private messages. The moderators also have no way of reading other peoples messages.

As I mentioned above, it`s fun for me! A vote would surely be far to democratic for this board! :)

Re: Karma............. Up Your Bum

Why don't you just put a donation link via paypal or something, so that if people wish to show their appreciation of the board by donating they can? Another board I am a member of does this and the little perk he gives out is letting people choose their own custom user title. Nothing too major to make those who choose not to donate feel bad, but I think its a nice little thank you for those who do.

And the higher your karma "score" the more it means that people agree with you, or like you, or haven't disliked what you said etc etc. (or simply got the 'ump)
