Old Accringtonian

I lived in Accrington until 1976 when I moved to Manchester. I lived in the Fire Station Houses in Manchester Road and in Southwood Drive in Baxenden until I moved to Manchester in 1976. I attended Peel Park school and Accrington High School. I would like to ask a question. Is the war memorial for the 1st world war still in Gatty Park? I have recently found out that my great uncle was killed in 1917 and is named on the memorial and I would like to pay my respects. He is buried in Belgium.

Hi Joan - I can't answer your question about the memorial, sorry - Retlaw is our expert in that field, and he will answer you I'm sure.
I remember you from High School - a pity you didn't attend the reunion we had this year - people did ask about you.

Hello and welcome.:)

I'm sure someone will know the answers you're looking for.

If they don't ask them again in the questions section.

There's a wealth of knowledge amongst the members here.

There is a memorial in Gatty Park, Church and one in Oak Hill Park. The one in gatty Park was designed and executed by Walter Marsden, a product of Accrington Grammar School. Read about him in the section on famous Accringtonians. I don't know who designed the Oak Hill Park one.

Yes there is a WW1 Memorial in Gatty Park, but there are no names on it.
The bronze plaque is in Gatty Hall.
Who are you after.
If you lived in the Fire Station Houses, then I should know you. I was in the Fire Brigade from 1957, until I retired.
