Why on earth were you sterilised, as according to your profile you've just turned 22?

Try Rennies. ;)

I'm 25 and have been told that I can't be sterilised till I'm older - I want your doctor!

Garinda - you are never too young to decide that you don't want to be an 'earth mother' running after a football teamsworth of brats!:)

I thought Carl was a he when he joined but maybe it's a case of Carl isn't her real name like Wynonie Harris (who I didn't think was a woman like some did because the original Wynonie Harris was a man)

Re: help

You can get pregnant after being sterilised, there is a 1 in 1000 failure rate. If you were sterilised during your last caesarian section then it may be more likely to fail than if you waited 6-8 weeks before having the procedure done.

If you get no joy from your GP then either telephone the secretary for your consultant who looked after you during your sterilisation and get an appointment with the consultant, or make an appointment to see the midwife at your GP surgery.

Your backache may well be caused by the fact that you have had children, especially if you had a twin pregnancy. It does take a long time for your body to get over having babies, which is why we don't recommend that people have consecutive pregnancies without at least 12-24 months rest in between.

Hope you find out what the problem is soon.....:D

Glad thats sorted, and that you're Carl's girl friend.

Images of Charles Hawtrey and his phantom pregnancy in 'Carry On' have been wiped from my mind.

Hope you get it sorted, and feel better soon. :)

Re: help

I've never known weight gain to be a known side effect of sterilisation. Margaret Pilkington will know for certain. All they do with a sterilisation during Caesarian is put a clip on each fallopian tube. They don't remove anything or do anything to alter your hormone levels in any way, so therefore weight gain should not be a side effect. I know plenty of people who have been sterilised in this way and not gained weight because there is no medical reason to. Like I said, Margaret will know, try sending her a pm.:D I have also looked after plenty of people who have become pregnant after sterilisation, although they do tell you that there is a small failure rate prior to the op.

Good luck getting an appointment, I hope that they get to the bottom of your problem soon. Let us know how you get on.

i think its affecting your spelling as well.

Margaret Pilkington 27-06-2005 13:31

Re: help

Weight gain is not a side effect of sterilisation. It may just be a side effect of the craving for pudding and custard.
And lettie I don't want to quibble with your statistics but we always told our ladies that there was a 1 in 300 chance of failure......regardless of how the operation is done or who does the operation.
I would think that if the last period was 31st of March it would be rather early to be feeling a baby move.......13 weeks......I know you have previous pregnancies, that does sometimes make a difference in when you feel the baby move.
You really need a BetaHcg blood test.

Margaret Pilkington 27-06-2005 13:34

Re: help

I have looked after a FEW women who have unfortunately become pregnant after sterilization.......but I have to say it wasn't as many as the statistics predict.
One lady had been sterilized for over 10 years when she found herself pregnant......it all turned out happily though as she had a new partner who had no children.

lettie 27-06-2005 13:57

Re: help

Good grief, is the failure rate as high as 1 in 300..... They still tell us at uni that it's 1 in 1000. I have known loads who have got pregnant after sterilisation and go on to deliver. The thing that most of them have in common is that they are sterilised either at C section or immediately post partum instead of waiting a couple of months. The reasons for this are either they would be pregnant again within a few weeks of having their baby or they don't wish their family (sometimes including partner) to know they are being sterilised.

One lass who I looked after a few years ago got pregnant after both herself and her partner had been sterilised. Unlucky or what!!!! :D

Margaret Pilkington 27-06-2005 19:27

Re: help

Yep, Lettie so it is about 3 in a thousand..........I have to say that I had not nursed that many......maybe 10 in 25 years.
I know that one consultant used to press women into sterilisation 48hours after delivery......he has now retired.
I don't think post partum ops are such a good idea.......I think that you need time to get your non-pregnant brain cells working again before you make such a drastic decision.

I know that we did lots and lots of reversals....... which I personally felt was a waste of resources......plus there was the additional risk after reversal of ectopic pregnancy.

me too.....just think ,if you are pregnant:D ......CLAIMS ARE US :D

Margaret Pilkington 27-06-2005 20:07

Re: help

Granny.....all women sign a form to say that they understand that there is a failure rate.....so if it fails, then it is tough titties......definitely no cash claims.

Re: help

Re: help

I'm afraid I can't be more help because I've never been sterilised, but your doctor doesn't sound very helpful at all. You are supposed to be entitled to a second opinion aren't you? Have you asked for one? I would be doing.
