eBay.

I've joined eBay, after eventually finding a name that hadn't been already take. I am thinking of supplementing my meagre income by selling some stuff on it.

Any tips, pitfalls, or experiences greatly received.:)

Re: eBay.

Hiya
Im a powerseller on ebay so if you need to know anything just ask. To start selling you have to register with your credit or debit card. You are best getting a feedback at buying though before selling as people are often aware of 0 zero feedback sellers trying to scam people.
Dont forget to add postage and packaging costs onto your auction and if you accept paypal as a payment the y also like to take their % as well.
Ebay charges from as little as 15p to sell your item but they also charge you a final value fee as well of the price it sells for.
Sounds complicated but it really isnt.

Re: eBay.

NEVER EVER GO ON WHILST DRUNK! :)

When buying, look at feedback and check out what sort of items they have sold. someone who has sold 200 DVDs to the same person may be a bit 'sus'. Personally I would be extra cautious if the person has less than 10 sales and less than 95% good feedback. For anything over £100 I would be looking to collect in person. Remember no matter what eBay tell you if it isn't as described in the auction you have 7 days from the sale to reject the goods under the distance selling regs.

When selling make sure you have fully cleared funds before sending the item or letting them collect. Never accept a bankers draft from someone for more than the item was sold/advertised for. It is a standard scam. the funds seem to clear, you send it on with the extra cash to pay for shipping etc. then the bank tells you its forged etc and claim the money back leaving you without cash or the goods.

Use Buy it Now if you are happy to set a price or use reserves to make sure stuf doesn't go for pennies.

Some people use 'friends' to bid items up. If eBay find out they will pull your account.

We buy quite a lot off ebay, well Ian does, both buy it now and auctioned items, we've had some good bargins and haven't had any bad experiences yet, we always check the feedback etc.

Am I a scam? Oh, dear.:(

I've been called worse, usually justifiably.;)

Re: eBay.

Kipax, was that aimed at the advice i gave or said ? or in a mocking fashion at garinda ?

What i was only saying is when i am buying i prefer to buy from people with feedback, at least you know then that they have had genuine sales put through ebay. As an ebayer with a few years experience ive seen some of the scams that some people do get away with on ebay and also spoke to people on the forums asking for help when they have been ripped off !

ive never been on ebay,,, wouldent know how to go about it ,,i would be frightened to give my bank account number etc!!!!!!!!!!!!is it realy safe?

jimmi5bellies 23-08-2005 15:41

Re: eBay.

yes granny it is safe etc, at the end of the day no matter who you pay (ie) in a shop using a cheque you are still giving your bank account number away.
You can also pay sellers on ebay via a postal order or through paypal.

grannyclaret 23-08-2005 15:44

Re: eBay.

i might just give it a nosey then,,,,thanks

Have been a regular buyer/seller on e bay for a while now,i recommend that you enrole with the paypal team for the secure online payments which is bloody good.also i never accept any cheques or c.o.d .
go garinda have fun but dont sell your body

jimmi5bellies 24-08-2005 08:49

Re: eBay.

Scooby ... why dont you take cheques ?

In over 700+ transactions ive only ever had 1 bounce and i hadnt sent off the goods so it didnt loose me anything.
If you do accept cheques Garinda always allow at least 5 days for them to clear.
Paypal is great but you also have to be aware that the buyer if not happy with goods can tell paypal that the goods never arrived and do a charge back ! Always get a proof of postage by the way from the post office when you ship out the goods.
Postal orders are a great form of payment, they are 100% guaranteed not to bounce and are treated as cash at the post office, you can also bank these.

Never give your own email out. Always go through the ebay messages system.

And never buy anything off anyone who suggests that you don't buy through ebay but go to them direct.

Thanks for all your advice and tips, I'll buy you all a drink when I've made my fortune.:)

I know my eldest lad goes on e-bay but I just daren't cos I just know I would get addicted!!!

Funny story though My mum saw some glazed garden plant pots and put a bid in for them and was really proud of herself when she came out on top... until they arrived and they were only big enough to fit in a dolls house...about an inch high. At least she saw the funny side cos it was her own fault as the seller had put the full dimensions on the ad she just hadn't read them!! doh! :)

Re: eBay.

Ebay is gr8 ive had to stop myself getting led into temptation n no funds in bank atm helps the cause LOL. Register with paypal its instant payment but there is a 5% sellers fee for the priviledge on each sale i think but not for buyers :). Always view feedback on buyers/sellers it helps to give an insight into ppl u is dealing with, they have selling tips on site to help u maximise yr sales. U can view other ppls selling items that are simular to yrs to give u a selling price & check postage so that u claim the right postage back from buyer.

Get plenty of packaging stuff n bubblewrap n you is on your way :) Good luck

Re: eBay.

Ebay is great fun. I've bought some really interesting things on there and had some real bargains. I did once manage to sell something at a loss because I forgot to put a reserve and the postage came to more than my estimate! Fortunately I didn' lose much and we learn from our mistakes.

It's a fact that regulars are wary of buying from newbies with zero feedback because thre have been too many con artists who take your money and then run, the next thing you know "this person is no longer a registered member" but you can bet your boots they have registered again under another name to do exactly the same thing. There are also people who offer "bargains" until you check out the exhorbitant postage rates. It's a bit like the people who set up near markets and sell "out of a suitcase" - caveat emptor. However, most people are genuine and once you get some positive feedback you'll be well away.

Now, what are you selling Rindy? Can you give us the link so we can come over and have a butchers? ;)

Hee hee, I'm still keeping an eye on what happens, but will post when my first sale goes up. I have cupboards of stuff I never ever use or appreciate anymore, even though I moved three times in four years, and had I thought cleared a lot of stuff to the charity shop.

Ebay sells practically anything as people buy absolutley any thing regardless of need or not Ive been there done it bought the tee shirt. As it goea I have to agree with Mummiboo, it is an expesive addiction for some but if you do decide on an Ebay experience then scooby12 is right you need to use pay pal it covers you and is safe (tried without and got stung)
