Shrove tuesday football

Every shrove tuesday, the Atherstone ball game takes over the main street, shops board their windows and close for the afternoon. The ball which is larger than normal, but half the size that it used to be is kicked from one end of long street to the other from 3 until 4.30. the person who has hold of the ball when it lands and keeps hold of it gets the next kick. At about 4.30, players start to try to hold on to the ball, the rest of his team helping him by surounding him, the others trying to get it of him. The person holding on to the ball at 5 is the winner. There's a winner and a winning team. It's very rough and bloody, not for the faint hearted. This said, at regular intervals, between kicks, girls and children, get to kick the ball.

Didn't they used to kick an animal's inflated stomach?

What do they use now?

Sounds a lot of fun.

A town is only as good as the people who live there make it. You don't need to wait for councillors to do something, you can use people power. Not sure what our next major event is this year as last year we had the war celebrations. probably our fun day, which is like a carnival field in the town centre, followed by the carnival, then i think it's the car show, in the town centre which is very good.
