Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Just reading this book for the first time by ex Accringtonian, Jeanette Winterson. It was dramatised and filmed in Accy. But anyone know any other plays or films that were filmed in Accrington and the surrounding area?

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Oranges was an excellent series, wish they would repeat it.

Juliet Bravo was filmed in Lancashire, with lots of scenes done in Accrington & the surrounding area.

Parts of Hettie Wainthrop also.

A TV film called The Nature of the Beast,
Also a fairly recent TV film about a girl leaving home - can't remember what it was called, was filmed in Accrington, Burnley, etc.

Tons of stuff done round here over the years, it's just bringing them to mind.

There was a film done nad they filmed it in the Spinning Jenny in Fern Gore.God knows why

kestrelx 10-09-2003 14:58

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Yeh I remember "Nature of the Beast!" bit like Kes without the Kes, instead there was a mythical "Big cat" that roamed the backs of Fern Gore. I think Jeanette Winterson said "Accrington Stinks!" lol... :o ??? :o

The Preston Front - a fictional series about the lives and loves of TA members. I remember one particular scene was done by the War Memorial in Ossy.

Wow a film star on the accy Forum

jason 05-10-2003 19:16

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

not really a filmstar but i have done quite a few productions on stage and the tv.

Caz 05-10-2003 19:47

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Parts of Oranges may have been shot in Burnley, but some were shot in Accy, Jason. That's the town the story's about after all.

Parts of Juliet Bravo were filmed in several towns in East lancs including Accy.

jason 05-10-2003 19:54

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

i never said it wasnt filmed in accy,i said the church used was in burnley.i know juliet bravo was filmed all over this surrounding area(i was in it).

It must have been the way you worded your reply then.
It made it look like as if I was wrong if you check. :)

"fantasty rooms" i think it was called a room design program with laurence lewelyn bowen who was visiting tiffany glass to give him inspiration for a room he was doing.

Am I the only one here who does not give a *!"^ about Oranges are not the only fruit?

Jo 10-10-2003 08:57

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Yep, looks like you are.
And remember Tealeaf, although you may not believe this judging from you ceiling, phone and wheelie bin: orange is not the only colour either....  ;D

HarryX 10-10-2003 09:16

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Never seen the program. In fact I only found out through this thread that there is even a connection with the area...  WHATS IT ABOUT ? When was it on.. how many episodes.. A series was it.. whos in it ?

Jo 10-10-2003 09:23

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

The books the best bet for a starter, then watch the film after it.
It's about a girl growing up in Accy in a penticostal church community with strict parents in quite poor and very restrictive conditions. Can't tell you more or it'd spoil the story - definitely worthwhile though, Harry. :)

Tealeaf 10-10-2003 09:25

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

I've read that it's about rampant lesbian activity all around Accy in the 1950's - apparently, not many people knew it went on, but it did.

This Lesbo thing really does not interest me, unless of course It's a pair of 20 year olds, one blondie, one brunette, nice bums, nice up top, long legs and they're desperate for a 3 up with yours truly.

Tealeaf 10-10-2003 09:26

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Eh....are Jo & me on about the same book?

Jo 10-10-2003 09:52

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Yeah Tealeaf we are. But the "Lesbo thing" is only the outcome of the supression. There is much more to the book than that. It says a lot about Accy is those years and about certain church communities in particular and about being girl in puberty years with no-one to turn to.
Anyway, you just spoilt the end for Harry!

Tealeaf 10-10-2003 09:59

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Sorry to spoil the end Harry....apparently the book is all about the meaning of life as we know it

HarryX 10-10-2003 10:08

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

The meaning of life eh?  I preffered the Monty Python version of that :)

This oranges thing has been on Sky.. some odd channel and I didnt take any notice.. I will wait until it appears again as it surely will :)

Tealeaf 10-10-2003 10:13

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Yeah....you never know, their may may a sequel...ORNTOF (II)..directed by Quentin Tarrentino....lesbian gang massacres all round Accy in 1960....town hall covered in ketchup...lovely stuff

Jo 10-10-2003 11:10

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Think you've drunk too much green tea with peppermint today Tealeaf.
You're rather aggressive - should cut down the dosage! Shall I send you some Camomile??  ;D

Tealeaf 10-10-2003 11:12

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

I'm a gentle soul, Jo.....you know that. Anyway, I'm perfectly happy with Imperial Leather

Jo 10-10-2003 11:14

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

I meant camomile tea silly!! Not the soap!!
Took me a while to get what you were on about there - imperial leather??

Know you're gentle really, you just get heated occasionally on certain subjects.  :-*

Tealeaf 10-10-2003 11:17

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

I wondered what you was on about......I don't get heated, do I?...Is that the impression I give.....I always thought I was just thinking outside the box....and trying to follow it through to it's logical conclusion

Re: Oranges are not the only Fruit.

Girls Night starring Julie Walters and Brenda Blethyn was filmed in Rawtenstall, a very moving film about a cancer sufferer and her sister in law going to Las Vegas following a win at bingo (well worth watching)

Have you tried the library? You will need to know the name of the author as well, just ask at the desk if they haven't got it they will order it for you.

Just finished the book, it was very good not to over the top with the sexuality issue. Have reserved a couple more of her novels at the library.
