Victoria Hospital

Curious to know if Accrington Hospital is still in business , been a few years since I lived in Accrington , I check various news-sites to keep up on local happenings and see lots of items about Queens Park hospital in B,burn being extended and the Infirmary being closed but never a mention about Accrington Vic. Just wondering where local workers go for a couple of stitchs, broken bones and such. When I was an apprentice at J T Rothwells in Church during the 60's that was the place they sent you , if you were fit to walk you had to make your own way there on the bus which ran from Ossie to Clayton via Accrington, you even had to clock-out and pay your own bus fare.
thanks John

Re: Victoria Hospital

Accy Vic is still up and running but has limited services now. It is run by the PCT and has a minor injuries unit. There are some wards which tend to be inhabited by elderly people who are unfit to be nursed at home but not seriously ill enough to require acute care on a general medical ward. I think the GP's make direct referral to Accy Vic when they have a patient who requires a bed. Consultants come over from Blackburn and run clinics there, so there are antenatal clinics, eye clinic and general clinics for surgical and medical patients. There is a renal unit there and also an EMI Unit (Elderly Mentally Ill). There is a physio suite there and family planning clinic. The Health Visitors from the local PCT tend to be based there.

I was there 3 weeks ago having my finger bandaged up after a dog bit me! It's open until 8.30pm but you have to get there before 8.15.

My youngest daughter was there the other week having her wrist put in a pot.

I go regularly to the eye clinic.

Is that building across the road still an EMI unit or has that changed now?

I remember it well, John. My Mum died there in the mid sixties, as her mother, my Nana, did in the eighties. I would hate to see it knocked down though. Hopefully, it won't go the same way as the Grammer School, St Andrew's Church and Sacred Heart.......all buildings I remember so well from my childhood.

So good to go in there and see not changed very much ..only go for women's check ups every three years, (thank goodness .. count me blessings) but still feels homely and friendly. Hope will keep going for many years in its current form. Still has those green tiles Steeljack.

Had many a bone set in the past by Mr. Waring .. clumsyclot you understand.

Yes, good memories even though sad things too.

'The Mount' is somewhat of an ESMI unit it's run by Lancashire Care (Mental Health Trust) rather than HRV PCT.

I presume it will continue as such even with the pending re-organisation, as far as I know Lancashire Care has not been re-organised whereas HRV PCT is joining with BPR PCT to form a new 'East Lancs PCT' ........ anyone remember East Lancs Health Authority from 5 years ago :p well done labour for wasting 5 years, billions of pounds and putting us back, basically where we were albeit with more devolved services which need more management and paperwork to ensure that they are operating correctly

Re: Victoria Hospital

The Mount is no longer used for EMI patients they are now all cared for at "Hillside" within Queens Park (soon to be known as "Royal Blackburn" but some local comments may now follow).
GP Wd is what used to be FS2,
Day Hospital (MS1) for re-hab,
phyiso dept (old A&E),
x-ray,
out patients,
Breast screening Wd5,
Bone denseity (think that in the old Mat area),
Dental Unit (nights used by NHSD emergency Dentist)

It is still well used but think it could be better used for the local community and surrounding areas.
