WWII Prisoner of War Camp

I’ve heard a rumour that during WWII there was a Prisoner of War Camp somewhere on the Ossy moors.

Can anyone throw any light on this matter?

Whilst I am at it. Has anyone heard of a railway station called Entwistle that was also supposed to be on the Ossy moors? In the late forties our band of intrepid, scabby kneed explorer kids spent many fruitless days searching for Entwistle without any success.

yep ,my Mum used to reminisce tell the story that they were Italians , some were allowed out to work on local farms much to the delight of the local teenage girls from Ossy and west-end .

I remember the PoW camp at Stanhill when I was very small. I'm not sure if the Italians were still there, I think it was Germans. They used to whittle toys out of pieces of wood and some of them used to be given tokens, instead of money, and were allowed out of the camp. They used to go in my aunt's bakers shop in West End.

I also remember Entwistle, back in the days of steam trains. My dad was in business in Bolton and travelled by train from Blackburn until 1953 when he got his first post-war car. I occasionally went with him on a Saturday and I know the train used to pass through it. There was a big water tank there, next to the station, where they used to refill the boilers.

Much obliged everyone for the information.

No wonder we never found Entwistle. We were looking in the wrong place.
