House Insurance

Does anyone know of any insurance companies that will insure un-occupied houses? My father had to go into a home, informed the insurance company and now they will only insure his home for 90days for fire or explosion and nothing else. Have spent most of day ringing around but have got nowhere.

Thanks

Have you tried Age Concern......they do insurance policies....not sure of the details but they would tell you at the top of Broadway in Accrington.
Also give Saga a ring...they are usually helpful with policies for the over 55's.

It's Age Concern that won't insure the house, thanks Margaret. Have managed to get the number for British Insurance Brokers, so shall ring them tomorrow.

Re: House Insurance

It's probably going to be difficult because one of the first questions they ask is if the house is ever unoccupied for lengthy periods.

Good luck.

Insurance companies are as bad as banks, they lend you an umbrella when its fine, and take it off you when its raining.
The best thing to do is cheat, like they do don't be so honest with these theives, they only know what you tell them.

Every 90 days or so go and stay there overnight - would that solve it?

The problem with not telling the truth is, it invalidates the policy. I think Willows idea is best.

Re: House Insurance

Thanks for all your replies. Have to agree with Margaret though.

Been in contact with British Insurance Brokers who have given me names of insurance companies who are willing to insure the house. Only thing now is that they all are asking how much it would be to rebuild the house as well as the value of the house. The value of the house is easy enough to work out it's just the rebuilding of the house. Have rang up the neighbours but no-one seems to know the rebuilding cost, so if anyone have any ideas i would be grateful. The house is valued at around £70,000.

Good idea Willow, but don't really fancy that.

Jimmi my sister wants to rent it out but i don't. We both agreed when my father took ill that if we couldn't agree over something we wouldn't fall out. So we let a relation have the casting vote, who said do nothing for a few months then think again.

Sara, I think the 'do nothing' option for a few months is a good one.......who knows, in a few months you may be able to work something out.

Surely if you tell the insurance companies the current value of the house, they can work out what it would cost to rebuild.

Re: House Insurance

I know of a company that will insure Unoccupied Houses for 12 months + and give FULL COVEr inc Storm & Theft Damage.

In the BB5 Postal Area the cost for this said Insurance would be (calculators Ready)

0.30% x The Building Sum Insured
+ 5 % - Insurance Premium Tax
+ £15.00 - Admin Fee

Your Rebuild Figure of £70.000 would be £235.50. Exprensive but gives the certanty of FULL cover.

HTH - should you require any more info Please feel free to PM me.

Re: House Insurance

Oh and if it was rented the price for that with a diffrent company would be roughly.

£145.00 - this would include Property Owners Liability & loss of Rent
