English Language Lessons??

Couple of questions. Refering to the American word sleddin: Why do you guys refer to it as sledging? Do you call the double railed item a sledge then?

I noted flashy talking about her pramming. Do you call both a "stroller" (kid carrier)" as well as a "shopping cart" a pram?

Thanks Accywebbers for your continued help with my introduction to the Queen's English!

Re: English Language Lessons??

A sledge is something you sit on to slide down the snowy hillsides. hence sledging!

A pram ( or parambulator :D ) is what babies ride in.

A shopping trolley is what you put your shopping in whilst in the supermarket

Feel free to ask any more!

Re: English Language Lessons??

Thanks Panther. Just remember about the trolley and already knew the chips. Parambulator is a new one.

A brew to us is a cold beer. My mum always refer to having tea as having a cuppa. Did you guys know we went sledding instead of sledging? It just is odd I've never heard that expression before. For long distance and speed, I ride the sled on my stomach and steer with my hands. Much better control then using your feet!

Re: English Language Lessons??

Pram is just short for perambulator and the verb 'to perambulate' is very similar to 'to stroll' so a pram being the same as a stroller makes sense. However, even though they may all be prams some prams are buggies. In the olden days we used to call the ones toddlers sit up in 'pushchairs' but I don't think anyone uses that term any more.

Our sidewalks are pavements - even if they are not paved.
A faucet is a tap.

I confused my American friend when I mentioned cotton wool. She just called it cotton.

You've got to be careful with some expressions because things which are quite innocent on one side of the Atlantic can be quite rude on the other. ;)

I know loads of parents of toddlers and we all call them pushchairs-its not old fashioned Willow.

we also call them strollers or buggys as well though.

One thing that's always baffled me is the American term 'jaywalking'. What is it

Maybe you should ask Prof. Felipe Fernández-Armesto! :D I think he'll have a good idea by now.

The prof who got on the wrong side of the cops in Atlanta and ended up being thrown to the ground, handcuffed and jailed.

I think it means crossing the street at the wrong place. They prefer people to cross at 'intersections' - road junctions to you and me.

Tinkerbelle 07-02-2007 23:13

Re: English Language Lessons??

Ahh right, I've not heard of him.

Right, I would have guessed that 'jaywalking' was the equivalent of walking around on our motorways

WillowTheWhisp 07-02-2007 23:16

Re: English Language Lessons??

I wouldn't have expected it to cover things like crossing a road in the wrong place either but maybe it's more dangerous over there. Perhaps wandering about on motorways is "aggravated jaywalking" or something. ;)

Tinkerbelle 07-02-2007 23:21

Re: English Language Lessons??

LOL! Or go up in bird size the more dangerous it is ....... 'buzzardwalking' ...... 'ostrichwalking' :D

Gosh Ian, don't be saying that. The powers that be will start demanding helmets for all sledgers!

That's what makes it a thrill ride down our back hill. You've got to avoid a stump then through the gate, hopefull avoiding the barbwire! That's when the rocks come into play.

That's what I like about the control our sled has. The boards the kids go on are totally unsteerable for anyone over 40!:p

Brian,

What is 'jaywalking'?

Re: English Language Lessons??

Like it's been said, just crossing a busy raod away from the established crosswalks. It's a fine art when getting around a city. It's done all the time and rarely enforced. I guess you could get a ~$25 ticket for it.

It's mostly enforced, I presume, where there have been many pedestrians hit. Or maybe where on coming traffic is coming from a blind spot. No idea why it's called jaywalking though!

I was watching a film last night and one of the American actresses said "I've made your cot up" .... Is cot the American word for bed?

For the Americans on site, we call a baby's bed with bars on the side, a 'cot'.

WillowTheWhisp 18-02-2007 20:40

Re: English Language Lessons??

I think a cot is one of those fold up bed type things that you only use on odd occasions but I await confirmation from our American friends on this.

Hey Tinks, sorry for the delay in response (been off on a southern golf (YUCK) trip with a bunch of mates). What you refer to as a cot we call a baby crib!
