Re: Why?
well this thread has taught me a bit ...
as for the eggs we have always saved them until the sunday but only because we followed tradition , although i made my lot make them last for a few days after easter lol.. me personally always treat it as a day to have all the family round for a meal where poss |
Re: Why?
Willow we were taught that Friday was the day of the Crucifixion and not day one. Saturday was day one, Easter Sunday we were given an hard boiled egg and a small chocolate egg in a little paper basket to take home and were always told NOT to eat it until Easter Monday. Day 3.
If this wasn't the case then why would we have Easter Monday? I just naturally assumed that everyone ate their eggs on the Monday, but you live and learn. Most people nowadays just assume the egg thing is to do with the Easter bunny. |

It's a Bank Holiday, not a Christian festival. Up to 1870 it was just an ordinary working day like any other and it has no significance whatever in the religious calendar. |
Re: Why?
As a child it used to surprise me that shops were open on Good Friday but closed on Easter Monday. I thought they should have been closed on the Friday out of respect.

Re: Why?
I'm sure that at one time they did close, and the only thing open was the fish market...and that was only open until dinner time. But times change and everyone seems to worship at the shrine of commercialism now.
