Any other Graduates out there?

Just got back from Annie Victoria Atkin's Graduation from High School. Quite an event, with bagpipes and all. Although there were 425 in her senior class, the whole ceremony only took 2 hours. She was 25th in her class. Just a bit of bragging to the Accyweb family!:cool::p

Any other graduates out there?

Brian

P.S. Oh, and Joshua was voted most likely to succeed in his middle school graduating class of 250 kids.:)

Re: Any other Graduates out there?

Obviously the UK education system is different to the US one, so we don't 'graduate' from 'high' school. In our system there isn't a graduation until you complete a higher education course, usually a degree at a university when graduates are in their 20s.

garinda 09-06-2007 19:01

Re: Any other Graduates out there?

I was just thinking about this difference, as I watched them graduating High School, in the movie Grease.

As Tin Monkey pointed out, graduates here are people who have completed a degree. I graduated in 1986, with a first class Bachelor of Arts (Honours.)

Congratulations to Annie.:)

Did they have a graduation dance and fun fair, like in Grease?:D

Would be good to see any piccies LYY, sure you have them.

Well done your kids .. must be proud.

Always wondered on what pointers they base a student on 'most likely to succeed' ? (no budgie jokes please). Is it academic ability, ambition driven, entrepreneur, materialistic driven, personality, networking ability .. ? hope you get my meaning. And how to do they consider what is success ??
Also wonder if any stastitics have been produced that endorse the earlier honour.

High school just sort of fizzles to an end here although we do seem to have adopted the US idea of the school prom now.

I have two degrees. An undergraduate first degree, plus a post graduate Masters. I only need one more and I could form an all female singing trio. ;)

Still don't know much, mind you. :D

Re: Any other Graduates out there?

It is very different here Brian and many people do not get higher qualifications until they are much older. I decided to persue a different avenue and went for a Nursing registration when I was 19. I never fancied going to University so doing the RGN was an alternative. I then went to Uni and got a Diploma in Midwifery followed by mentoring and clinical assessing qualifications.

I finally bit the bullet and did a part time degree whilst working full time. It was 5 years of hellish hard work trying to meet assignment deadlines whilst working shifts. I graduated last year (at the grand old age of 38) with a BSc (Hons) in Professional Studies of Midwifery. I don't even want to think about doing a Masters just yet..:)

Congratulations to Annie. :D

Thanks, but to be honest, having higher qualifications doesn't always mean someone has good all-round knowledge. The fact is, the higher the qualification, the more specialised, focussed and limited the knowledge is. I know people with post-graduate qualifications and don't even know what day it is. ;)

I remember the university graduate we got in our office who wasn't the slightest bit of use but got paid more than the rest of us because he was 'qualified'. You can imagine how well that went down, especially when we had to teach him.

Was he called entwisi? Oh, no, of course not, he dropped out! (perhaps it's time to change a signature?).

Thanks so much Margaret for turning my little bit of father's pride into an Anti-American statement. I believe, at least in this case, you could have kept your comment to yourself, smiley face or naught!

However, I guess you are pretty accurate. It does seem that "the Yanks" have done absolutely nothing for humanity in her useless 400 years. Oh except the frequent raping, pillaging, disembowling, murder of millions, saviour of none, etc.. All this with not one admirable instance or quality.

It is quite obvious that all humanity would have been much better without her. Heck then I could have been working in a lovely cotton mill in Yorkshire or a mine in Lancashire. Hmmm, but what language would I be speaking?

Hugs, Kisses, and have a bloody nice day!

Brian

Congratulations to your daughter and son. I'm sure you must be a very proud dad! :)

What's the time zone difference between the US and Accrington? Cotton Mills and Mines? Looks like the time difference is at least a century or more.

Silly over-reaction.

So, Tin Monkey, you give me my very first negative comma for merely addressing the unnecessary but continual Yankee slam from some Accy members! This was only meant as a positive day in the life of us over here. I guess sharing such things are no longer as welcomed as in the past. Shame!

And this from the biggest whinger the Accy trivia game has ever had. Seems extremely ironic coming from you!

Wynonie Harris 11-06-2007 21:29

Re: Any other Graduates out there?

The question we must ask ourselves is this - is a negative comma better than a positive fullstop?

Re: Any other Graduates out there?

I appear to have opened a can of worms.
I do not dislike all US citizens. I have friends who live there (quite happily).
What I find odd is the tendency for some to take any criticism as an affront to their national dignity.
When any member has a tendency to boast about national and family achievments it is inate in our British personality to 'bring them down a peg'. We are unaccustomed to self praise and it is embarrassing when witnessed.
If my remark has spoilt your joy at your family achievements, I regret it, but it makes me wonder why you chose to broadcast your good news in the 1st place. Graduation is nothing really special.

Bloody hell, can't someone share a bit of their happy news on the forum anymore?

If Margaret and the Tin Man, (he without the heart in the Wizard of Oz), had been here a little bit longer, they would have seen people sharing all kinds of sorrows and joys on this forum. From births and deaths, to more serious personal traumas such as abusive relationships, as well as the fun, nice things that happen in our lives from time to time. We've shared them all, laughed and cried.

Jesus, someone will soon be complaining about threads wishing people happy birthday, because it's seen as being just too happy, and congratulatory

Rant over.

Carry on.:).

Well get used to it Margaret cos if you look through the archives you will see that many a member posts regarding something their child has done... I know I will want to share with my accyweb mates on here when my son gets his GCSE results..or someone elses child gets into uni...how about the thread when two accyweb members announced they were moving in together or rather they were outed by garinda :D

Also all the births we've had announced...as for Brian he has been sharing his every day life with us for quite a while...be it his daughters graduation or the squirrel that visits regularly to what the weathers doing and I for one hope he carries on.

right said my bit back to my damn 1500 word essay I need to complete to get my qualification in counselling...oops :o

Rindy and Harwood Red, thanks for the well written comments. In the past I have spoken of this same daughter as having had a stroke at the age of 10 (oh no, there I go again whinging about family matters). She has overcome many different obstacles.

Mostly, my thread (as titled) was requesting anyone or everyone to share about their kids. Forgive me for not realizing that in England, all the kids move on from 13 years of schooling and go directly into 4 years of college. I didn't realize that.

I fear that the negative comments made about "bragging" may greatly change Accyweb from a family oriented forum into a bunch of whinging, whining, and complaining about all things of life.

I for one wish to always be available to encourage, uplift, and send cheers to those who need it. I wish to be able to laugh with those who laugh and cry with those who cry. And yes, I know, Englishmen don't cry!

IMO, I feel it more appropriate to ignore a thread then to go out of ones way to bring someone down a peg or two. We already have the rest of the world to do that to us all!

Re: Any other Graduates out there?

If you look closely you'll find that I replied politely to the original post and pointed out the differences between the UK and US education system. At no time did I demean LYY or his family's achievements.

The only issue for me was his over-reaction to Margaret's tongue-in-cheek comment and I still stand by that. To start ranting about American involvement in world affairs is a massive over-reation to a simple, no offence intended, comment. Perhaps LYY had his sense of humoUr removed when they implanted that enormous chip (or french fry) on his shoulder? ;)

As for the negative karma, well of course I sent it, because I signed it. At least I own up to criticisms I level on here.

As for some of the other comments on this thread, perhaps I need another level of education, but this time in how to be the perfect sycophant? :D

If the members didn't post their own personal news items such as exam successes this could turn into a very boring forum indeed. It's these little personal touches which keep it alive and friendly.

I have probably posted about my daughters' successes and failures in their dance competitions. I was particularly proud of Emz when she injured her foot but still went on to win a medal in another dance. I was proud of her achievement.

Where are you suggesting we draw the line? Do we no longer ask for help or advice as Lindsay did with her horsefly bites? Do we no longer tell of our funny experiences?

I sincerely hope you and your miserable opinions remain in the minority or this board will die a slow and agonising death as many others have done.

BTW Brian, not everyone here goes on from High School to further education. Some leave at 16 (but this is due to change as the government puts the school leaving age up to 18) and simply get a job. Some get an apprenticeship. Some continue their education at 'night school' or by correspondence courses. Some go on the 6th Form College and then leave from there and yet others go on from 6th Form College to University.

6th Form College is a bit of an anachronisitic name stemming from the days when High School began with Year One all over again up to Year Five for those leaving after 'O' levels (the equivalent of today's GCSEs) and Year Six for those going on to do 'A' levels. Nowadays the year numbering continues from Primary School which ends with Year Six so they start High School with Year Seven.

Maybe we don't do 'graduating' as it's such a hotchpotch when it comes to leaving. The year 11 pupils just sort of fizzle away from school when they have finished their particular exams or courses and do not all leave at the same time - even if they do all meet up again for the Prom.

LancYorkYankee 12-06-2007 17:40

Re: Any other Graduates out there?

Thanks Willow;) for both the explanation of how vastly different the schools systems are as well as what it really means to be an Accywebber in good standing. I know my favorite part of Accyweb is getting to know most by what is going on in their lives as well as their family's lives. I guess some would also demand that ButtomsMum cease and desist with the "family" picture as well as the age marker of their delightful child.

Okay back to thread, for those who may be curious, most U.S. students graduate from High School (their 13th year of schooling) at the age of 18. ~25% go directly into the workforce, ~10% into the military, and the rest move on to 4 year Universities or Colleges or to 2 years of Community College.

I believe we celebrate it as the point of entering true Adulthood. And Rindy, as I'm not well versed in the movie Grease I asked your dance question of Cindy and Joshua. They just kinda laugh and said we do not have that kind of thing.
