Viaduct
when was it built, how many arches does it have and i once got tolded of a teacher at my school is it the most curved bridge in the world is that bull ?
|
Re: Viaduct
It might have been the most curved viaduct once. Not sure if that still applies. I tried to count the arches once but confused myself. I may try again.
|
Re: Viaduct
Not wishing to sound pedantic, but I was just wondering, do the bridges that span Whalley Rd & Blackburn Rd count as part of the viaduct?
|
Re: Viaduct
That's a good question because it's not one continuous thing from the one in Whalley Road is it?
|
Re: Viaduct
dont see how the whalley rd one can Sparks, its a fair bit down the line to where it starts, used to walk it as a kid lol, never gave any thought to the blackburn rd one as there used to be signalmen.:D
|
Re: Viaduct
so does anyone know when it was built?
|
Re: Viaduct
In a bygone time of great wealth. Could anyone imagine today's govt. taking on building a railway system of such massive proportions as the Victorians did?
Then again, that cut over th' pennines was another one... |
Re: Viaduct
It was completed in 1852......and has 49 brick arches............
|
Re: Viaduct
49, NEVER!
I'm counting them in the morn!! Don'tr know why bt 17 arches rings a bell... |
Re: Viaduct
Remember there's a solid lump between Whalley Road and the main viaduct so that arch probably doesn't count.
|
Re: Viaduct
if theres 49 tal, i will become a dingle.:D
|
Re: Viaduct
Sounds more like the Ribblehead viaduct or something maybe. Perhaps ours is the tightest curve of a viaduct.
|
Re: Viaduct
There is a panormama here http://www.hyndburnbc.gov.uk/roundab...uk/viaduct.jpg that seems to have about 22 that I can count.
(Kipax, its OK, its HBCs bandwidth I'm nicking :D ) |
Re: Viaduct
It's hard to tell from that because some of the arches are behind a tree but I think I counted 24!
|

Re: Viaduct
Is that a 'for definite' answer? Are we starting with the one over Blackburn Road or eliminating that one? I reckon that counts because it seems to be continuous from there. But the one in Whalley Road is on its own.

Re: Viaduct
Well I walked under it last night and each arch has a plate on the wall with it's arch number and other details, presumably for if summat crashes into it. I walked under arch number 18 and then looked back and counted the rest, only got to 21.
