Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

it was tiny!

and the fish wasnt big either - could've got a much more filling meal for £3

i know its not all shops hte one in ozzy does decent portions.

Maybe the owner has watched "Super Size Me" and is expressing concern about the health of his customers ...

Whenever we get chips one portion is always enough for two people.

Re: Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

Fish and chips for three quid! Another reminder of my advancing age ... I can remember fish, chips, and peas for 1/6! At the Pilot House: massive portions of cod and chips, or haddock and chips, with a pint of John Smiths, for about $10.

Re: Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

Of course, the air fare to Canada etc. does tend to make it less of a bargain.

We used to get a portion of chips and 2 small sausages for our youngest 2 ....now we have to buy a portion each ........... and not because the kids are getting bigger either

Next year it could be 6 chips and one sausage. (Boom and Bust)
That is down to ten years sustained growth and financial stability.
Salt & vinegar 50p to cover inflation, growing rents and rates.

You wrote this in jest but our canteen/resturant at work actually charges 6p for a sachet of vinegar! Salt is currently free......

Crude vinegar (Chip shop) is about a pound a bucket full and most of that is diluted.
I think I may be tempted to carry some in my pocket if fish and chips were on the menu.

Oaklea chippy & York Street still serve decent portions, also Henry Street in Church

Had lunch in the cafe there yesterday, and the portions were ample...even for me, and I have a good appetite.

Don't know about the take-away counter though.

Re: Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

I've had small portions there before, at many chipies now they offer different size portions, we always get a large portion between three.
Many moons ago when we had a chippy (70's/80's) my mum used to give about 3 scoops per portion, now your lucky if you get a scoop.

Dawn-of-the-Shed 04-07-2007 16:35

Re: Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

Our chippy offers 3 sizes..... large ,(enough for 2) , small,(enough for 1) and a tray that would be ok for next doors chihuahua !!! saying that they are good chips;)

Re: Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

but for three quid i really do expect a full meal - it was rather disappointing as the chips do taste nice

i guess i'll have to head back to ozzy next time

Ah, but are the scoops now in metro ?

Entwisi: That is disgusting charging for the vinegar, part of the meal, ain't it ?
Complain. My daughter once complained when Littlewoods in Manchester began to charge for condiments.. wrote heavily to their H.O. .. within 2 weeks they had reverted back to giving freely.

What was that case in America the other week where this guy shot the assistant in the arm 'cause they were only allowed to give a certain amount of sauces, and he wanted more ? Don't revert to this though.

grego

there was an option for a large but that was 1.50/2

and for a quid i did expect more than just a handful. which in all honesty thats what they were - a handful - and i've got small square hands

Kate, we complained when they introduced it, they have a captive market so just ignored us.

With your toast you get marg or you can pay 10p for a portion of butter. to be fair at 13p/slice its cheap enough though

The biggest bloody tax fiddle around! How often do you see a chippy using a till and ringing it in?...not very often!

And while I'm on a rant, a few years ago all chippys put their prices up(on chips) by at least 30%, they blamed it on the poor harvest. The next year when every farmer this side of mongolia was growing spuds, low and behold there was a glut, the prices plummeted!, did we get a reduction in price? did we hellers like.

Aswell as the chips, what about the peas 40p and 80p, gravey the same, don't even start me on curry sauce, dill hall lane charge £1, yes one bloody pound for a poly carton or ladel of the powdered, just add water rubbish.

It's a rip off and most of the time, I begrudge paying it.

then again, SEA BREEZE moscow mill street give mammouth portions!

We should have a thread naming and shaming rubbish establishments and praising the good ones ! Chippy tea used to be an economical and convenient meal now it's an expensive (and mainly overrated) treat !

Don't forget with take-aways, as opposed to eating in, you aren't paying VAT @17.5% either.

That all depends if it's freshly made, or kept warm and reheated.;)

Re: Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

I know this is strange but I cant even manage a full portion of fish and chips now. I get one of the small £2.20 portions of fish and chips from moorend chippy and I even struggle with that, I must only have a little, easily pleased, tum tum.

garinda 04-07-2007 21:52

Re: Why are portions gettin smaller from the chip shop

4.4 What about freshly cooked products?

If you sell freshly cooked products for consumption while they are still hot they are standard-rated, 4.5.
Some of these products are, however, bought to eat later, either cold or after re-heating. Examples include pies, pasties, sausage rolls and similar savoury products, cooked chickens or joints of meat, bread products and croissants. The liability will depend, therefore, on how you sell them.

I know it doesn't apply to fish and chips, but it does to some other types of take-aways.
