Who makes the best pies??

We do!!! Hollands are the best!!!! :) :) :)

Tealeaf 02-02-2004 13:16

No doubt whatsoever!

Sara 02-02-2004 14:24

There's a little pie shop in Church, called Yates. In my opinion they make the best pies, as well as t/cakes etc. Give it a try.

Tealeaf 02-02-2004 14:34

....But they don't do a steak & kidney pudding

Sara 02-02-2004 14:45

[QUOTE=Tealeaf]....But they don't do a steak & kidney pudding[

That's why we have Hollands. Can't beat there puddings.

janet 02-02-2004 15:33

Best pie shop has to be the one on Henry street, church, taste like home made to me.

lettie 02-02-2004 15:35

Love hollands steak and kidney puddings, used to like Greens (Ossy) they made great meat and potato pies. Went off them when an acquaintance of mine told me that he used to spit in the pastry mixer whenever his boss told him off.

ellie 02-02-2004 15:39

the pie shop in harwood next to the town gate is a good un. their meat and potato pies are really good, only trouble is they are too big

Tealeaf 02-02-2004 16:07

Hey Lettie,

It's a good job your mate was only spitting in the mixer......

Whats the pie debate doing in the piccy section anyway?

Atarah 02-02-2004 21:17

Pies piccy.

I put it there Tealeaf, cos its a LOCAL view, local history in the making. They have been in existence since 1851 and ... anyway .... I work there! :) I might even get you some pies for your next visit home to Church!!!! :p

K.S.H 03-02-2004 04:59

Hollands used to be the best round here but I think Clayton park are better now, especially the potato. Never tried one? go to chippy on Moscow mill st, near bubble factory, they only sell theirs now, used to have Claytons and hollands but ended up not selling the hollands so they stopped getting them.

K.S.H 04-02-2004 18:50

I dont think tonights telegraph headlines will do Hollands sales any good for the next few month, I certainly wont be buying any! or having any Kebabs!

Uncle Mick 04-02-2004 20:36

Seeing most of my family worked there, it`s Hollands forever!!

Presume you have never worked at Hollands Pies then!!!!
I have and would never eat another pie from there.

I do like Cissy Green's meat pies - made in Haslingden. Very thin pastry.

I think there are far better pies than Holland's. I don't know the name of the Preston firm's I like.

I am keen on snake and pigmy pies and puddings.

Still got to be Yates's on Henry st. Church. They are always trying out different things while keeping the old favourites. Proper old fashioned bakers.

Saintys pies from barnoldswick are good, inghams butchers in foulridge are also good, berkins butchers in rosegrove make fantastic pork pies.

There's a pie shop that my dad goes to a few times a month on the way to Preston (just before you get there), they sell the most amazing pies ever, pastry doesn't get on with my tummy but their pastry for some reason does

Can always remember the first time I worked in Scotland went into the chippy and of course fish and chips are known as a fish supper, one of the lads didn't want a fish supper, he wanted meat pie and chips, the woman serving asked if he wanted it warm or cold, warm please was the reply, at which the lady tossed the pie in the deep fat fryer:eek::eek::D

What I don't understand is why a thread about pies is stuck in Accy Photos -there isn't even a photo of a pie on it! Or am I missing something -perhaps it's a withdrawal symptom -can't get pies in Italy...

If you buy a pie now make sure it has horns sticking out so you know it's a cow pie.
If there are just two big pointed ears don't buy it.

Will anybody buy pies, steak(?) and kidney puddings etc. now?

The bakery on Pickup Street in Clayton was run by sisters called Hope. I'd be surprised if their still alive and I think they were spinsters so probably wouldn't have family to pass the business on to. The chip shop on Barnes Square was run by the Orr's when I was around. Their son Stephen was in my class at All Saints.

She was called Tilda and made oval shaped full of gelatine delicious meat pies, good hot or cold.

Not sure it's called that now? It's a fancy deli type sandwich shop. Last proper baker Ted (Hillman I think) retired out of there a few years ago.
Post Office undergoing a major refurb' not before time. Scaffolding up and upstairs being ripped out last week when I passed. :D

My cheese and onion pie is popular, I got the recipe about 30 years ago from the cook when I worked in a home for elderly people - but at the risk of being controversial I think Birds Eye chicken pies taste really good even though they might be full of rubbish! And I do like Cissie Greens pies too.

Proper bakers going, proper butchers too, no doubt, proper fishmongers, proper chippies, proper tailors ... I don't like it. It's becoming a Walmart world .... Maybe I'm just an out of date old fart who wore clogs. But those clogs were made to measure for me, by a man skilled in his craft. And my shoes were re-soled and heeled by a proper cobbler.

When I first arrived in Canada, I could pull into a full-service gast station. A guy would come out, fill my tank (at 45 cents a gallon), check my oil and show me the stick, clean my windshield, and ask if my tire pressure needed checking. Now I do all this myself for $1.20 a litre:rolleyes: And when my tech toys screw up ... tech support:mad: ... a call centre in India:eek: (Fortunately I speak French; so, I choose the French language option and get a call centre in Canada:D) The world is starting to suck big time. I'm glad I'm on my way out. Just wish I could get a couple of real pies to take with me.

Haven't read this thread in full but I used to rate Martin's meat & potato pies. And the plate meat pies that Annie used to make on Tinker Brow - used to go there for dinner in the school holidays.

Lot's of chippies round here sell Pukka Pies (I've not tried 'em). I still get Hollands frozen steak & kidney puds from Morrisons - but they always seem to have the obligatory bit of gristle in them !

I've always wondered about Pukka Pies their adverts seem to pop up on every Televised footy match abroad as well if English clubs are involved. Annie's pies were great, her hubby Jim, used to take a bakers basket full of all sorts of pies into the Tape room of the Stop And Rest Ossy every Friday night

You don't shoot Haggis, spoils the meat & puts a hole in the pelt making them useless for turning into a spog (like a sporran but cheaper & nastier ), a sharp rap with a big stick is the preferred method. :)

When you think what's in a haggis why are we making all this fuss about a bit of horse meat?

Och you're confusing them with the wee Grouse beastie ! The Haggis is land bound & has wee leggies longer ye ken on one side than the other, so as the wee scunners leggin' it along the glens & fells it can only run one way or the other or it'll tip over.

So you decide if it's a lefty or a righty & you wait along one of the wee beasts trails with a big stick ready to ambush it & give it a proper good clout & Crivens, your suppers arrived. :)

Maybe Scotland should employ some Newfoundland sealers ... they could really go to town. And folks wouldn't get upset with them. After all, Haggis (Haggises:confused:) aren't as cute as baby Harp seals.;)

While you were in Southern Alberta, did you ever come accross the Sidehill Gouger ... I know they are quite common in Saskatchewan?:D They probably split off from the Protohaggis some time in the Devonian.;)

They move that fast Dave it appears they are flying sometimes. I was really cross one day when I asked for Haggis, when I got it they hadn't bothered to remove the led shot, it got stuck in one of my dental cavities, I was not happy I can tell you:)

Yet again, another reason you don't shoot them.

Probably some Cold War experiment ... still doesn't explain why he supports the Saskatchewan Roughriders:confused:

Wonder what gopher pie would taste like? Probably a lot like horse:D Folks who lived in Saskatchewan in the Dirty Thirties have told me that gopher often made it onto the menu.

Aye, there was all kinds of rumours amongst the troops about super mutant beasts escaped from the complex  On all the maps there was always a big red O.O.B. area marked off somewhere in the centre of the training area, which just compounded the notoriety.

As to the taste of gopher, probably awful. :)

I've no idea ... shot hundreds of the little buggers myself; but never had the urge to eat one.;) In Saskatchewan, many Rural Municipalities used to put a bounty on them; it was a big deal for the kids who get a quarter for each gopher tail they took to the RM office. But if you are interested, I think it would take two of them to make a small pie ... only problem is, I don't think there are two many gophers over there.:D
