Usually large joints of beef pork gammon lamb in a hot table that you choose to have have with your spuds etc. The chef carves it and serves so you can have a bit of each if you want.

Try the Whittakers on Burnley Road on a Sunday, think it's around 8 quid a head so more expensive than the Recap but it's well worth the money

fc:stanley 16-07-2007 12:38

mrjdallen 16-07-2007 12:44

Re: Carvery

they will have to make there money some how, charging 5.50 on sundays, its the same as the cinema charging different prices on different nights for the exact same film.

Just to add to this thread. We have just returned from the Redcap. Terrible place. Food was tough and burnt, thats after queing up for about 15 minutes to get to the counter. The hygeine is appaling. I noticed the girls clearing the tables when people left and not one of them cleaned the table, despite the obvious sign of somebody having jusy eaten there.

We won't be going back.

No problem, unless you were the chef you can remain blameless :D

Yeah, I wondered that too .... sounds like an all you can eat buffet for guys who can't spell kolesteroil. There's a place on Tyendenaga Rez called the Big Belly Deli that is a lot like that.:)

Re: Carvery

Tried out the Redcap today, the food was fine and not too busy although as we were coming out at about 6'ish it was getting a lot busier. Have to say though that I do prefer the Whittakers and there really isn't that much difference pricewise as the Whittakers price includes a starter or sweet whereas the Redcaps's price is just for the main meal & starters & sweets are extra.

fc:stanley 23-07-2007 19:51

Accymad i also went tonight , went at half past 6 ! :D:D Was good once again but busy like always but good food once again :D

Re: Carvery

we went on a sunday, my only complaint was the waiting time in the queue, it was really busy, the chef serves your meat and you help yourself to as much veg as you want, its 5.95 on a sunday.

Went there a few weeks ago .. beef tough, soggie vegetables, lousy potatoes.. yorkshire pudd. ok. Is within the same group as Red Cap .. but do find them hit and miss .. sometimes good/sometimes not.

They obviously buy there meat in bulk, and maybe from different sources to get the best price? (Only guessing here though). No excuse for soggy veg. though ... is probably frozen .. certainly the carrots appear to be.

Suppose is best to get the chicken .. very rarely can people make that tough.

As said previously, get what you pay for.

Re: Carvery

I think there is another pub on Grane Rd - the Grey Mare(?), where we used to go for lunch when I worked in Blackburn in the early '80s.
We went in the Redcap a few times when we were over last month, a good meal every time. The Gamecock was a disappointment - a couldn't care less attitude from the staff. The Three Fishes at Mytton was very good but not really a carvery. Oaklea was also good as were BaltiStan and the Indian in Warner St.
Must also give mention to the cafe in the Arcade, really wonderful toasted currant teacake bacon sandwiches.

I think the era before Carveries Jay, we used to take visitors to the factory there - fantastic black puddings. Intended to go when we were over but just too busy. Hopefully next time, at the back end of the year

The Redcap and the Gamecock have both improved since you went back Barrie. They were using proccessed meats while you were over and although it was edibile it can't compare to Turkey on the bone and real Roast Beef. Balti Stan and Mitali were both brill but as for your currant teacake and bacon sarnie (yuck is my opinion):p

Thanks Wadey - that is as I remember it. Never knew the landlords name but think he had a son in the RAF - a jet jockey who had flown Lightnings, there were plenty of stunning photos around.
