Sheffield Uni

Has anyone been to Sheffield University?
I'm going to an open day in September but wondered if anyone on here has any experience of the uni?

It's my first choice at the minute as it's the only 'traditional' university that does Journalism BA.

Failing that I'll probably fall back on doing Philosophy at Nottingham which was my first choice before I wanted to do something more applied.

Preston is well known for its fantastic journalism course but if your after a traditional uni then go to sheffield, its meant to be top notch.

Ask on The Student Room - there will be plenty of students to answer your questions on the university there.

Yeah I've got a couple of mates at Preston and it seems alright.
It's just the surroundings that put me off to be honest.

Cheers for that blazey :)

I went there.... many moons ago, though. Top notch place and well respected too.

Might just be able to compromise my hate of Yorkshire to go there then :D

You'll need a thick skin with those South Yorkshire folk (the locals, not the students). I loved their dry sense of humour, but sometimes their insistence on 'telling it as it is' did wear a bit thin. ;)

Everyone will have different opinions, but it's a well-respected 'red brick' university, with some excellent academic staff, and you'll have a ball if you decide to go there.

I actually feel quite envious. ;)

Thanks for that TM.
It looks like a great option at the moment, it's about the right distance from home for me and the entry grades are reasonable at BBB.
Good stuff!

At least you'll be able to get back for home games and think of all those handy aways...Bradford, Rotherham, Chesterfield, Grimsby...not that that should influence your choice, of course! ;)

Not at all :D
Sheffield is only 2 trains away from Accy (I think?) but I might be driving by then anyways.

It's worth going to Sheffield in order just to ride on the Pater Noster lift, located in the Arts Tower (I dunno where the school/dept. of Journalism is located). I could tell you a story about my experiance on it, but unfortunatly this is not the place to do so.

Department-wise, Journalism is in with History & Geography etc. in Social Sciences.

A paternoster for students? Isn't that a bit of a lethal combination?!

Its certainly a lethal machine for a 40 year-old drunk.

Have they still got Pater Nosters at Sheffield? I used to love riding on those things at Birmingham Poly, especially when I'd been "studying" in the Student Union bar. ;)

The last time I was there was about 7 years ago, and they were there then (in the Arts Tower).

Would've thought Blair's nanny state legislation had banned 'em by now. I used to love riding right over the top and back down again!
