Elvis 30th anniversary!

Well its the 30th Anniversary of the death of Elvis today i was born the day he died we celebrate together! lol

What are your thoughts on the king of rock and roll 30 years after his death is he still as popular today as he was in his day?

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

Both my parents loved Elvis, and growing up his music was part of my life. Driving up to the Lakes every weekend to water-ski, was spent listening to all his concerts, and I still know every word to all his songs.

I was twelve, and in Yorkshire, the day he died, and it felt like losing a member of the family.

It maybe thirty years since Elvis died, but his music will live on forever.

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

He was my teen hearthrob in the 50's, but when I grew up, and he got drug bloated, I went right off him.

My next door neighbour's cat is named Elvis :)

That man was just magic,,,I loved all that he sang
Ballads ,his heart and soul were in his songs
Pop ,he had you dancing, and tapping your feet
Religous ,he could make you believe in his song ,what ever your religion
.................
His humour was second to none, and he was so kind, never forgot his humble beginnings
Oh and his looks were out of this world

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

Don't think really appreciated him when I was in my teens, never been a pop groupie, however, later in life listening to his voice with its clarity, rich and velvity tones .. no one else has ever matched them, and instantly recognisable; this is the best asset any singer can give.

Watched a programme tonight 'Elvis in colour' and how his career grew in a business like fashion, but, yes, he changed music into a more commercial market.

Used to like Marty Wilde, but seeing him on this programme with what I am sure was a toupee intact .. he looked a right plonker .... :D:D

Grew up with his music, I was never a lover of the films apart from Loving you and GI Blues. I did enjoy his spiritual side and favoured the majority of his music. A sad and needless loss to the world, but would we care as deeply had he lived. Good bless and keep the music alive.

Thought that myself Doug ... if he had carried on going downhill in his behaviour and obvious overweight body mass, he would have been vilified from many quarters. Course do feel, he would have pulled himself back and grown older in a way in which we all respect.

Have not a lot of patience for people who idolise (not just appreciate) singers, footballers and actors, however, they have a large influence on the youth of today and a responsibility to them, and do feel Elvis would have turned around should he have survived the damage he did to his own body. Very sad.

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

i think what elvis gave the world was the crossover from solely "black music" in fact in his early days many thought he was,n the way america was in the 50s that was a great gift. theres been many great artists but Elvis broke the mold.his music will live forever,we had the good fortune to meet a couple of people who knew him growing up both were black americans n both said he was just one of the lads n mixed with them n everybody.

I am not a fan but do know a few and aint seen them today so they must be reminissing a bit. He was better when younger in my opinion and slip as he got older a tad though still popular. Died too young in my opinion the same as all the greats.

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

It's amazing to think he was only in the public eye for twenty one years whilst alive. A shorter career than people like Madonna, which is weird, but he made such a massive world wide impression. Music is so fragmented today, that no one will ever acheive the same adoration from fans.

Rockabilly Elvis '56, G.I. Elvis in '58, Elvis in unworthy Hollywood films in the early/mid sixties, come back Elvis in black leather in '69, and then lastly Vegas Elvis in his white suits in the seventies.

As other people have said, I love his gospel music the best. Even as an atheist it touches my soul.

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

Never really listened to him as a kid , he allways seemed part of the Connie Francis, Matt Munroe, Lita Roza generation , but watching the comeback concerts which he did in Hawaii and Las Vegas I can appreciate his talent .

Where did I hear the news he was dead .....during a layover/plane change at Beruit airport

I didn't find out till the day after he died as I was engaged in a rather painful world of my own on the day he died.
I found out from a news paper the day after. I cried so hard I thought I would never stop.
All the nurses thought it was the early on set of the baby blues. All I could do was sob Elvis is dead.
I have never known such joy and sorrow at the same time.
I have always loved is music even when he was all bloated his voice never lost it's magic. In the early days he was the most handsome man alive.
Elvis will always live on in our hearts.

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

It must be - oh - August 1956. I'm 13 years old and I'm staying with my aunt and uncle in Whitley Bay, Northumberland. I've gone down to the sea-front into Spanish City, the amusement arcade and pleasure beach, and I'm wandering about, a bit bored.

There are some Teddy Boys, Geordies, hanging round a juke-box. One of them puts some money in the slot and a record starts. "Since my baby left me..found a new place to dwell..." I stand still and listen. WOW! I've heard of this Elvis Presley but never heard his records before. The Teddy Boys play the record over and over again. I'm getting hungry, it's lunchtime, but even the thought of ham salad and then homepicked rasperries and cream at auntie's can't get me out of Spanish City and away from Elvis. I'm hooked.

*******
I went home at the end of the month and I started saving my pocket money to buy each new Elvis release as it came out.

I love music in all forms. I'm a Big Band fan and adore Glenn Miller but Elvis was something special and there will never be another. Handsome like a Greek god and with a great voice and a raw energy, good humoured and a real gentleman, that was Elvis.

Re: Elvis 30th anniversary!

Although a bit young to be totally engaged, did like him and his music. Favorite was/is Suspicious Minds, but he did have alot of great stuff. Didn't care much for how overwhelmingly he was/is idolized. He sure wasn't close to perfect (IMO).

Also, and possibly a greater contribution to the world would have been Elvis keeping his daughter from marrying Michael Jackson!:p

At least Elvis had a pretty full career. I just wonder what would have happened with Buddy Holly (who I REALLY like) and others who died so early in their careers? I guess that's for another thread eh?

He may have looked like a god, Brian, but even Elvis couldn't have appeared out of the clouds, wagging his finger and saying, "Lisa, you are NOT to marry that man. Have a deep-fried peanut butter sandwich instead."

Of course he was dead many years. My comment was:

Also, and possibly a greater contribution to the world would have been Elvis keeping his daughter from marrying Michael Jackson!:p

Meaning, if he was still alive, I believe he'd be shooting at Michael "Moonwalk boy" rather than at his television sets.
