Question Without Photo
Whilst browsing through an old "Accy Observer" in the Library this morning I came across a report of a meeting which had unanimously voted (along with other items) to get the Town Council to fund the planting of thousands of trees on the Coppice.
When was this ? |
Re: Question Without Photo
1980 about.......those trees seem about 20-odd years old

Re: Question Without Photo
Not sure, taking a guess at mid seventies.
A link here shows a few pics of the coppice, including an old one of the cannons and one of the opening in 1909. Also shows an aerial view. http://www.panopticons.uk.net/panopt...ecoppice.html# |
Re: Question Without Photo
I remember there being no trees on the coppice, I moved to Accy, from Church in about 1976, so I'll hazard a guess at 1979/80

Re: Question Without Photo
I'll have a guess around 1982

Re: Question Without Photo
In the second group of "Then & Now" photos on www.owdbert.com I mentioned about the trees being planted in the early 70s --- but --- the "Observer" I was reading was dated September 16th 1910 (1910 not an error). A group of local "worthies" which I interpreted to be those with plenty of brass, had got together to discuss how to improve the area and they voted unanimously for the formation of a "Beautiful Accrington Association." During the meeting a resolution was passed urging the Town Council to plant trees on the Coppice at public expense. Will pursue this sometime to see how long the Association lasted.
