What Are They?
noticed at the bottom of owd bobs, where they are demolishing the old G@A plastics factory, on the gable wall are 5 red brick arches diminishing in size the further up the gable you go. the highest 2 are probably about 4ft, just wondered what they were once used as? think the factory was black and whites before it became G@A, just thought after another week probably they will have vanished forever, any ideas? its bugging me. thanks.

Re: What Are They?
Could they be for a hoist? Just a thought for when they were getting big loads delivered.

Re: What Are They?

Re: What Are They?
sorry for the wander , but I wonder if any members of the local historical society follow this web-site for tips about Accringtons past , because stuff is thrown up on here from time to time which should definatly be noted down or looked into

Could they have been windows? (I haven't been and looked yet.)

Re: What Are They?
I was just thinking of the ones in Ormerod Street in the wall that used to be part of Platts/Bulloughs.

Re: What Are They?
:D I go past there nearly every day and I never really look but I'm sure that what's left of them sort of disappears into the ground. I'm going down tomorrow so I'll try to remember to have a look.

Re: What Are They?
Your right Willow I can remember seeing the workers in the basement like thing when it was Howard and Bulloughs
|
Re: What Are They?
I suppose it's because the ground rises up and the front of the factory was at ground level but halfway up Ormerod Street it became basement.

Re: What Are They?
the thing that puts me off the "windows" a bit- the last arch is not very high maybe 18"- 24" n dont leave much room or point of a window.
|
Re: What Are They?
could it have been for ventilation ?
i also remember the ones going up ormerod st |
Re: What Are They?
thats a better possibility to me beechy, still aint sure though.

Re: What Are They?

Re: What Are They?
Does it have a cellar? could have been windows for that.
I haven't seen them but I'll have a look if I pass it, are they definately knocking the building down? sure they guy who owns G&A plastics once told me there was a preservation order on the building or the chimney there |

Re: What Are They?
Certainly doesn't look to be preserved today when I went past it !
They look like cellar windows to me; maybe the height of the road down onto Hyndburn Rd has changed in the intervening years ? |

Re: What Are They?
I work on Park Road, just accross from the G & A factory and there's a lot of activity going on in there today and a hell of a lot of noise. We've tried to be nosey but can't see much of what's going on, we thought maybe the chimney was being demolished but can't really see that as surely the road would have to be closed off when that happens. Anyone know what's going to be built in it's place?
