bt rip off merchants - anyone know a phone engineer ?

I am looking for some info and possibly a small? job done...
I have been looking to switch to sky talk from virgin as sky offered me quite a good deal on the whole package (tv,bb & phone) - as I have virgin bb and phone - with sky telly.
so I called bt tonight to ask how I go about switching back to them and the guy told that because my bt line has not been used in more than 1 year it has ceased - and that it would cost £125 to get it unceased - ****** that I thought as I paid them initially to get the bt line in the house to begin with !!
so if anyone knows a bt engineer who could help me out then I would would like to know.. I would pay him of course and hoepfully he wouldnt charge £125...

I don't know about that but you do know that when your with Sky you still have to pay BT monthly line rental. Because Sky offered us the £26 a month thing for bb, tv and phone. When we read the small print we realised it would cost an extra £9.99 per month because of the line rental.

Re: bt rip off merchants - anyone know a phone engineer ?

yeah I know and I actually think its £11.99 - which doesnt bother me...sky have offered me sky telly with all the movies and all the sports, skytalk with free calls during the day as well as the usual free night and weekend calls and sky bb (mid package) for £33 a month for 5 months...then upto £47 ther after...just now I am paying £25 odd for sky alone without sports or movies - and whatever for my bb & phone with virgin..so it is a good deal they have put in front of me..
just dont see why I have to pay £125 to bt when the line is still there along with the box on the wall - all bt have to do is flick a switch - and they charge £125 to do so !!

Why not just ring Virgin and get a better price ?

I thought your BT line had to be connected to get Sky. If you want a BT engineer just keep your eye open for them working in the area and ask if they fancy doing the job. My sister did that and saved a fortune.

Sky seem to be a law unto themselves; I have been with them for over 10 years and am looking to move house;I thought my loyalty would count for something but apparently not ! I would get a better deal, and a new sky box by cancelling at my old address and setting up as a new customer all over again when I move !

We've got Sky TV and not got a BT line.

Not sure an engineer would be able to do it. It probably has to be recorded somewhere and the cost accounted for.

cos you dont get sky sports interactive ( good for those champions league nights:)) and itv regional channels (I like to watch the news from glasgow/west of scotland) plus sky sports news/sky one or sky news you dont get those choices/channels with virgin...although virgin do good deals to..but its those choices that sky can offer that make it attractive to me..

no this is not the case at all - and I may have to keep my eye open for an engineer working close by..

That's what I'd do BT wanted to charge my sister £117 and she got the job done for next to nothing!!

If your property hasn't had a BT line before then fair enough, but ive never heard of a line ceasing:confused:, if the line is still up and the wire is still in the house then they would only need to switch ya on!!....you would think BT would offer free connection to get people back:rolleyes:

If a line has been unused for a while it's not just a switch on at the exchange. They send an engineer out to make sure the line hasn't been damaged. When I moved to Accy last year they had to do this. As it turned out the line had been disconnected in the box down the road and the internal wiring from the point of entry to the house also had to be replaced because it had been damaged by previous residents.

I doubt anyone thinks it justifies £125 but it's also not always plain sailing.

Re: bt rip off merchants - anyone know a phone engineer ?

They wanted is to pay £117 for a fault on a line that was in use. You can imagine what they got told, it ended up costing nothing.
